i've got an ibanez S470 (H-S-H) and i just replaced my bridge and neck pickup (Dimarzio FRED in the Bridge and 59 in the neck) and would like to wire it so that the middle pickup isn't used at all. Because i have the 5 way switch, i was wondering if i could get it set up to do as follows:
position 1: Bridge in series
position 2: Coil tap on bridge keeping the 'hotter' coil active
position 3: less hot coils from both neck and bridge position
position 4: coil tap on neck keeping the 'hotter coil active
position 5: neck in series

I'm fairly sure this is possible. Does anyone know how? I've got four conductor wires on both pickups and would be grateful if anyone if anyone knew which of the coils was the hot one for both pickups.

Hi. Yes, your circuit is possible BUT it would require a different selector switch. Unfortunately, as you know, on the Ibanez S470, control cavity space is at a severe premium. So much so that the selector switch has to be mounted on a raised plastic surround.

I see four realistic options.

1) SATCH.
Three-way selector switch, wired like a Telecaster. Coil tapping activated by push-pull pot.

2) TRIPLE SHOT.
Three-way selector switch, wired like a Telecaster. HBs mounted in Triple Shot surrounds. (NOTE: If you have the Ibanez metal HB surrounds, converting to TS rings will involve drilling new holes. These would not be hidden if you ever decided to convert back to original spec.)

3) FAKE PRS.
The Schaller Model P megaswitch would allow your S470 HBs to immitate the coil combinations of the PRS rotary PU selector. I reckon that this switch will fit inside the control cavity. Just.

4) S CLASSIC
Convert to that Ibanez circuit that offers;
Bridge HB only
Inside coils
Both HBs
Neck HB wired in parallel
Neck HB only​
This requires a different five-way switch.


By the way, in the majority of HBs, neither coil is "hotter" than the other. Usually, one coil may sound nicer than the other, especially for the bridge/treble position pickup.

You need our old friend, the colour code conversion diagram from the Support/Wiring Diagrams section of the main SD website. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=color_codes

NOTE: Even if you follow these codes, you may find the phase relationship between your two humbuckers is reversed. The solution is to swap the hot and ground conductors of one of the humbuckers.

alright, first of all thank you! I was afraid that this wouldn't be possible. but that's cool. I'm kinda tentative to go with triple shots because of the drilling and the tiny switches. so i just have two more questions:

Are the South coils always the more powerful?
and
could i get it to do this:
position 1: Bridge in Series
Position 2: Bridge in Parallel
Position 3: inside coils
position 4: neck parallel
position 5: Neck series

A wiring diagram would be beautiful. also this forum, is awesome.

In theory, allowing for manufacturing tolerances, neither coil of a humbucker is more powerful than the other. If it were, the hum and interference cancellation theory breaks down.

It is arguable that the adjustable polepiece coil seems louder simply because its poles can be set nearer to the strings than the stud polepieces of the second coil.

Your latest five-way switching idea is, essentially, a slight variation on the Ibanez S Classic circuit mentioned in post #4. The official Ibanez schematic diagram for that has appeared in threads on this forum before. You would just need to tweek it slightly to get the bridge PU in parallel selection. Once again, the regular five-way selector switch will not suffice.
