pickups/amp matching

i have noticed that with the various pickups i have tried not all of them sounded good on all amps......some of them sounded best on one particular amp while others prefered one other. I don't enjoy my JB with my mesa boogie DC-5 as much as i enjoy it when i play through a marshall(same with my CC)......and i prefer much more the sound of my emg85 through my boogie than with a marshall.....Have you noticed something similar?Does an amp has a much greater influence on sound than guitar/pickups?

Re: pickups/amp matching

I prefer my alnico 5 Strat & Tele pickups with my old tweed Amps as they have a warmer tone than my blackface Fenders.

I can use a2 or a5 with my other amps...but the old tweed Deluxes and Supers sound best, to me, with alnico 5.

The other thing is:

I rarely wail through my 20 watt amps with humbuckers. It's fun, but it basically turns them inside out with overdrive and makes getting a clean tone nearly impossible.

So I tend to use humbuckers with my more powerful amps: Super Reverb, 59 Bassman, model 1987 50 watt Marshall, etc.

And I use my Strats and Teles through one or two tweed Deluxes, brown Deluxes or Deluxe Reverbs.
