Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

I just bought a new Epiphone Les Paul Standard, i have to say i love almost everything about the guitar, however i was looking for a really modern character for the bridge, and a well defined neck pickup. I was leaning towards dimarzio's, but i'll take all suggestions. I play through a Laney all valve TT50 if that helps.

thanks guys

I would say go for a JB & Jazz (I did

)

That combo will cover a lot of bases, unless you have a specific sound in mind?

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Seymour Duncan:
Jazz/Phat Cat on the Neck
JB/Custom V on the Bridge

DiMarzio:
Paf Joe/Humbucker from Hell on the Neck
Norton/Evolution on the Bridge

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

The Jazz/JB or 59N/JB combo sounds great in the Epi Les Pauls I have used them in. And if you replace your two tone controls with push/pull pots you can get some great single coils tones too. Another great set would be a set of 59's or a set of Pearly Gates. Lew

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

the jazz neck pickup is the most defined i think i have heard and for the bridge maybe a custom or distortion. Good luck

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Pearly Gates or APH in the neck and Custom or Custom 5 in the bridge.

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Modern character as in modern rock? Which band? I'm probably dense but I am kinda confused on that one...as in gritty or that kind of? Lots of recent bands seem to have a grittier (sorry for lack of a better word) sound. (are you trying to get the tone from the song lateralus? Tool tones?) For that gritty sound I'd recommend a Custom, Invader, or distortion, the ceramic mag pups. The JB (not my fav. pup) and jazz cover lots of bases as they said earlier. The C5 (also not my fav.) is traditional kicked up a notch or two. The CC is the warmest of the high output pups. Neck pups you could go jazz (my fav in a lp style) a 59 or something with an alnico 2 mag. For a distortion for grind. Some guys go with a JB in the neck and to me this seems like it would work VERY well. Hope I helped you some.

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

yeah, more of a modern rock/hardcore sound, preferably a distortion pickup as i dont usually play cleans on the bridge. i'm not a huge fan of the JB, though i was keen on a humbucker from hell in the neck position, im really leaning towards dimarzios. As for the duncans, wouldnt an invader get muddy in a lp?

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Grab a custom in the bridge, and for a nice neck pickup that stays fat and defined under all situations the 59.

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

i just heard some awesome shredding (rob balducci and neal schon) on the norton p'up, and ive heard some of paul gilbert while he was using the humbucker from hell, it sounds perfect for what i was looking for. neither of those guitarist use les paul's however... but the only way to find out is to try

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

For a hardcore sound I'd say go with the custom or distortion (I don't use the bridge for cleans either). There are some guys here who have luck with dimarzios and can make good reccomendations. I just don't like their sound. They generally don't sound warm enough to me or sound grainy.
(disclaimer: the few I've heard) Either way I'd listen to the Duncan and Dimarzio soundclips and compare that. If you want to be absolutely brutal and have tons of grind and sustain and be the hardest of the hardcore go with the SD Livewire metal calibrated set. The bridge won't hardly clean up at all on the clean soundclip it was still overdriving the amp. The neck is a livewire classic so you can get good classic humbucker clean tones.

if you're leaning toward dimarzio, i would recommend a fred in the bridge. it is the only dimarzio i liked. it's great for high gain stuff.

I play Hardcore using a '59/Custom in my Epi LP, I had the JB/Jazz in there too but the first mentioned combo is much fatter sounding in my rig. As a matter of fact it's almost perfect!

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Pearly Gates neck, Custom Custom Bridge (see below). I play a lot of stuff. I agree with whoever said the CC is warm, but it's got a great mid that really cuts through in the bridge. I have no problem getting a great tone in meltdown mode with that. The PG is really flexible too.

I notice from your name that you must be a Tool fan. I get a pretty nice Tool like tone from my Epi that I loaded with a pair of '59s with no covers. Adam Jones uses a stock early '80s Silverburst Les Paul (I forget if it's a Standard or Custom), so if that's the kind of sound you're looking for, you want something vintage-ish.

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

for hardcore, EMG 81 or 85 would be best in the bridge. Zakk Wylde has 81s in a les paul. So does one of the guitarists from Everytime I Die uses an 81 in a les paul, i think

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

I have an Epi-Les Paul Custom.
From all the research I've done, I'm going with the Custom/Jazz combination.

Re: Pickups - Epiphone Les Paul Standard

J, the guitar player for white zombie used Custom in the bridge. And me too, I use a custom on les paul.
