Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

Have another project i'm working on, and i want to put some new pups in an American Tele HH. It has an alder body, maple neck/rosewood board. Basically i'm looking for something in the bridge with a good heavy tone and sustain, and the neck something that is nice for leads but can clean up as well. This will be used for stuff along the lines of Failure, Isis, A Perfect Circle, etc. Any recommendations are welcome. I have an SH-5 Custom sitting around, but don't know if that would be a good option for the bridge. Thanks folks!!!!

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

also need to know about the amp/effects, string gauges, tunings, etc

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

Depends on the mod i suppose. I prefer passive pickups if that's an issue. As far as amps i have a few, a Vox AC30 (mainly for clean or lighter overdrive) as well as an Orange Rockerverb 50 into a 4x12 with Vintage 30's. For effects lately i've just been using the Line 6 M13.

As far as tunings and whatnot i usually stay in dropped d or d standard. There's the possibility that i would go down to C but usually not. String gauges i've been using 11's i think.

Basically i'd like something that can thicken up the sound a bit and still be articulate and heavy. I've always gone with something hotter in the bridge and a tad mellower in the neck, but i'm open to any recommendations as i haven't had an HH alder bodied guitar before.

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

SH-5 Custom was very tight and heavy for me in a Mahogany body tuned anywhere from dropped D to open C. Give it a shot.

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

I really enjoyed the Custom Custom B w/ PGN and a JB/Jazz with A2 swaps in that setup.

The Custom is a great option and since you already have it, try it. Match it with a Pearly gates, Jazz, or a 59 and you will be good. The Custom Matches great with all of those but, matches BEST with a Pearly Gates neck.

How about a '59 Bridge and a Phat Cat neck?

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

Alder can be bright - especially if it's heavy alder. I have a heavy alder bodied Tele with a rosewood fingerboard that I've never been able to get a great sound out of no matter which pickups I have in it.

That said, the PG neck pickup is a no brainer. For the bridge, if you want something stronger than vintage I've paired it with the Duncan Custom with great results and also with the PGb and Custom Custom. Never used those pickups in a Tele though. I HAVE in a Strat and liked all three combos very much.

Someone in here or on Harmony Central has a beautiful Fender Aerodyne Tele with dual P-Rails and the thing looks gorgeous!

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

dude the invader is a Chuck Norris caliber bridge pickup. however it looks kind of odd.

Re: Pickups for an alder Tele HH...

^ where did that come about?

I'd lobby for a PG set. I hear the PGn rocks some serious socks, and I know the PGb works in alder strats. For a Tele I'd reckon it wouldn't be radically different.

From the Invader I have in my Fender Stratocaster?

It's the best bridge pickup for leads I've ever used.

I mean he did talk about sustain and heavy tone right?

If not, the duncan distortion kind of has the same specs and is also worthy.
