Pickups for B-tuned

i've never really gotten the chance to crank 'em.. they have a couple at the practice rooms i use, and any attempt to get the poweramp section really opening up has the other band members get annoyed..

(the rooms are very small, BTW, and i only ever get the chance to play bass in metal groups.. *sigh*)

the 5150's have turned out like the original les paul in a way.. the likes of in flames and even jimmy page played nothing like Mr. Les Paul, the same way in flames and the other bands sound nothing like van halen :)

still.. aren't the 5150's 120w? i always thought that was overkill in itself hehe

Excellent comparison to the Lester.

The head is 120, but there's a lower powered combo version. Then again, who the hell wants less power :saeek:

I went from 100w to 30w...

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

means you can strip them walls bare with poweramp gain man, i'll never go above 50w, i only need 40w as it is :burnout:

i wouldnt mind if the 5150 had miles of clean headroom, but even a 6.4k antiquity single with the volume rolled back couldnt make it behave itself :laugh2:

then again, practice room amps are reknowned for being biased with a stopwatch and a crayon... i've probably never experienced the best of what it can offer, which is a shame..

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

They are now called the 6505....EVH is no longer affiliated with Peavey...same amp, different name. Check the Peavey webpage.

Never did like that amp though (I could never get a good tone through one not to say others dont).

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

A. The Invader sounds great downtuned, I prefer it in D, C, and B than in standard. Stays perfectly defined, one of the only reasons I keep it.

B. In Flames tone after Clayman/Colony = 5150's/5150 II's. Before that, I've seen Jesper with Crate heads, like the ones Cannibal Corpse uses/used.

Jesper uses the VooDoo V's and Explorer's, but not stock. He leaves the neck pickup as a dummy, with an EMG-81 in the bridge.

In video's on their site for the recording of STYE, They used a MIA Tele on clean parts, the LP mostly on distorted parts, through either a Laney VH-100 or a 5150 (I've seen both, side by side), with a Hush pedal.

C. Bands that use 5150's off the top of my head: In Flames, Opeth in studio, Soilwork, The Haunted (on rEVOLVEr they used JSX's though), Arch Enemy (Live they've been using JSX's now), Himsa, Atreyu, Killswitch Engage in studio, Kreator, God Forbid, and way too many other bands to list. Literally every NWOSHM band uses them.

Were they Blue VooDoos? I can't imagine any other Crate a pro would use...

The neck pickup was the only one I could see, as his hand was covering up the bridge :smack:

the man's right, i got a ticket last minute to see inflames last night!

what looked like 85/85s in both a gibson LP and an ESP explorer, both through 5150s :D

good live band as well.. nothing quite like a solo for two guitars, harmonised in fifths :32:

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

Does anyone else think it's funny that In Flames (who use C tuning) hijacked a thread about B tuning? :)

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

lol it turned into a good enough thread about heavy metal tone, its all good to me!

the 5150 (6505, either) must be the only *really* popular amp peavey makes.. i mean, most of the other stuff they do (with the possible exception of the classic 30 + 50) gets a real beasting in reviews..

but that gig last night (london apollo), i saw 4 5150s on stage at one point :laugh2:

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

Actually, It's all in 3rds ;). That's what gives it that beer-swigging viking metal feel!

A very amazing live band, but I really don't like the new album all that much.

And my XXX kicks ass ;).

Re: Pickups for B-tuned

I tune as low as dropped F# and my SD Custom Custom in the bridge and SD Alnico Pro II in the neck sounds outstanding!

Ungodly bottom end with tight mids.

Get close enough to the cabs and it feels like a purty woman lickin' yer balls.

3rds?

I actually really like Soundtrack. Track 9 (haven't seen the case in forever) is on of my all time favorites of theirs.

Yes, the XXX kicks mucho-ass. Severely underrated amplifier.

Well, minor 3rds to get picky ;). that's almost all of what their harmonies are.

I do like bits of soundtrack, but it just doesn't sound like an In Flames album to me. I do love a few select songs...My Sweet Shadow, In Search For I, and Evil In A Clost.

Oh, yeah. Brain fart. I thought you were talking about the tuning for a second. :)

Not really, a large portion of songs on Clayman, Colony, Reroute to Remain and Soundtrack to Our Escape are dropped to Bb (Bb-F-Bb-Eb-G-C). For example, Ordinary Story, Pinball Map, etc.

I beg to differ...STYE Is almost ALL in Bb, but Clayman, Colony, and R2R? Maybe 1/3 of R2R, but I know Pinball Map and Ordinary Story are in C Standard.

Well, dropped Bb isn't B, either :D

I've never learned to play any In Flames songs, and have only seen transcriptions for those in C standard. Regardless, dropped Bb is still not B :)
