hi all!!

first of all, excuse my bad english. i'm spanish and i dont's speak it very well.

well...i have got an epiphone les paul custom w/ 2 humbuckers and i want to change them.i'm desesperate because i'm asking everywhere and nobody knows what to say me.

i like to play all music, but i prefer to play punkrock like sum 41,my chemical romance, bad religion, and others...you know,a lot of palm mutes and fast melodies

i use the bridge pickup the 99% of the time,so i need something good for mi epi.

i'd been seeing some models:
-SD: '59SH1, CUSTOM SH5, JB SH4, CUSTOM 5 SH14, CUSTOMCUSTOM SH11... i think that better for me is the SH5...but i'm not sure.
-RIOGRANDE PICKUPS:the BBQ Buckers(dave baksh [sum41] has got this pickups in his prs).i heard good comments about this mark.

i think all this pickups are adequate for my stile.what better?

can you say a pickup for the neck too??

one more question:the gold cover affects to the sound?

thankyou all!!!

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

welcome to the forum!!

i think that a sh5 custom is a great choice, itll cover lots of styles and sounds great thru a distorted amp.

the gold cover may smooth out the treble a little bit but it wont be a huge difference

If you don't quite know what you're looking for in pickups, a Jazz (SH-2n) and a Custom (SH-5) is a safe bet for that music and guitar.

And yes, a covered pickup will sound a bit different. It will sound slightly darker, while an uncovered pickup will sound a bit more open.

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

hmmmm...that's the problem,if i buy the "non-covered version" the p'up will break my epi's aesthetic..because all the hardware is gold covered..
more opinions?
ok...then the sh5 is the best pickup for my epi?any better alternative?
one more question:has the p'up good sounds in clean channels?

thankyou very much!

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

BBQ will give you the Sum 41 sound. It is a very popular pickup for newer punk and hardcore. The new My Chemical Romance album is a Les Paul with Phat Cats (really!) and it sounds huge. Older My Chemical Romance (Brought you my bullets) is a Les Paul with a JB. The Phat Cat would also give you tones similar to Green Day style punk. Phat Cats would give you the best cleans, but they still have attitude and are really punchy, which is good for punk. I also play a lot of punk style music, and I did not think that the SH-5 sounded good for fast palm mutes and melodies.

In my opinion, a BBQ in the bridge and a Phat Cat in the neck or 2 Phat Cats would be the best. You want lots of punch and attitude, not hardcore metal attitude, but in-your-face attitude. You can put a gold cover on a pickup without a cover, as long as the screws line up.

where did you take all that information about sum41 and MCR?
my guitar's body is made of mahogany,so i need something that don't increases in excess the bass tones.does it the BBQ?

phat cat?i didn't hear this one never..it's made by sd?

thanks for all! (i hope you understand me!!)

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

Honestly bro, any pickup will be just fine for punk rock. Punk's about playing fast and hard and not really worrying too much about the nit-picky details.

If you GOTTA get something else in there, I find the CustomCustom has a lot of crunchy mids with what some say is 'no bass at all'...i think it balances perfectly since i play thru a 68 fender bassman amp. I'd also look into the Phat Cats...humbucker-sized P90's are sweet.

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

Get a Duncan Invader and you'll sound Punk as #$&%. Just ask Tom Delonge back when he used to play Strats.

Welcome to the forum,

I've got 2 Epi Les Pauls all equipped with C5's in the bridge and 59n's in the neck. They're a great sounding set. Very versatile, it can cover almost any rock style including punk and classic rock.

I've tried the JB and found that it lacked the low end crunch I wanted in a Les Paul.

I'd highly recommend the C5. It can very easily cover a Green Day, LZ, AC/DC,GnR, STP sound.

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

and what do you think about the BBQ??

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

I haven't tried the BBQ so I can't comment...

I have tried the JB, Jazzb, and Custom (ceramic) in the same Epi LP and none of them did the styles I described better than the C5...

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

IMO the C5 sounds too vintagey for punk. Led/AC DC/GnR/Stone Temple aren't exactly punk sounds. Do a search for "BBQ" and you will find old threads.

You want an uncovered bridge pickup, its better for higher output pickups.

If you want smooth bad religion type leads you want a Custom Custom.

If you want balls out harder bigwig type punk then a distortion or Invader should work well.

If you want a compromise between the two then a JB should work nicely. It'll have a bit more alnico sweetness in the chords than the distortion and still have great lead tone.

Wait are you going to play any lead at all?

Re: pickups for epi les paul custom to play punk rock and hardcore?

For LP's that rock....Custom and Custom 5 are great.

The Custom 5 is one of my alltime favorite Duncans, but I also like hot vintage tones, with plenty of snap on the highs, and deep crushing lows. It's more of a modern VH/Rush type vibe, but can get as heavy as you want it. Does cleans really well too.....like a 59B con carne. LOL

But...the Custom in a LP is balls to the wall tone. Nice and full and works great for rock/punk/metal. I have a Custom/Jazz in my heaviest sounding LP, and everyone who plays it loves it. The other night, a couple buddies from popular local punk bands came over and I sat back as they took turns, running it through a Marshall combo. I was amazed at what a great sound it had for highgain riffy metal and punk. They both went away convinced that the Custom was their next pickup.
