Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

I've got a thread about body woods in the guitarshop forum, so here is the pickup thread!

I want a guitar for metal... it will be tuned one step down and would be used for shredding and things like Metallica and detuned stuff. It has to work well under high gain.

For the neck humbucker I'm thinking about JB, Full Shred and the Screamin Demon... there's also the 59 and Jazz if I want to go the less output option.

For the bridge I was thinking about the Distortion, Custom, Full Shred and the Dimebucker....

What do you suggest?

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

Duncan JB, Invader, Custom, 59n

EMG 81b/85n or 81b/81n or 81b/60n

DiMarzio Super Distortion/PAF

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

I have a JB in the neck of my Strat - it's pretty much perfect for metal but you might have trouble finding something that'll balance well and sound thick in comparsion in the bridge.

I wonder how similar a FS and a JB sound in the neck ... I've never heard any Full Shred sound clips. Ever.

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

well if its gonna be an all out metal guitar, try out some live wires or emg's, if u want passive, then probably the DD set would fulfil ur needs.
as for a more versatile setup for metal/shred plus some decent cleans i would say DD Bridge, Super Distortion or PATB-2 (if u have a floyd) and for the neck the paf pro, jazz or even the air norton.

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

I'm also considering the active route..... probably a good idea since it would be my only active guitar....

EMG's or Duncan Livewires?

I really like the soloing tone Zakk Wylde has on Ozzy's 'Dreamer'....

EMG 85 in the neck, 81 in the bridge.

I have that setup and it's sweet.

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

Yikes... just checked the prices of EMG's on ebay... DAMN EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmmm.........how about Duncans then? lol... :D

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

The EMG ZW set does sound really good. Got it in an Epi Les Paul Std.

I'm modifying another Epi LP right now and just ordered the infamous JB/Jazz combo. Can't wait to try it out.

Re: Pickups for metal!!!!!!!!

theoretically, any good pickup can be used well for anything. When i look for pickups i look for character of tone, not output. Again, maiden got great tone and sustain with PAF's through jcm800's.
