Pickups for my tele!

Hi I just bought a tele body and neck and I have been buying parts for it. Which pickups would I buy if I wanted the traditional tele sound like early Led Zeppelin?

Re: Pickups for my tele!

Vintage Tele pickups. Keep in mind though, that a lot of the Tele sound that Page was able to get also had to do with mic placement.

Re: Pickups for my tele!

well JP probably had stock fender pickups from the late 50's in his tele so maybe the antiquity 1955 bridge or the antiquity II set would get you there. A broadcaster in the bridge could get you pretty close too i would think.

Re: Pickups for my tele!

Somebody said here once (I think it was Lew) that JP used a 15' speaker to obtain that deep tone from Lez Zep first two albums...

I have a 54 set in a maple body/rosewood guitar and they are killer for distortion. They aren't very famous pickups but they are great!!

If JP had a 50's late tele his pickups were 10 years old when he recorded the first lez zep album (late 1968). Antiquities are suposed to mimic a 35 years old pickup!!! So I think the 54 will take you closer to that tone.

Anyway If you find any "Curly" (that is his login name) post you will find in his signature a link to his web page. He has there many clips from his tele antiquitie set. I this are two threads started by him where you can find some clips.

The antiquitie tone seems too smooth for that kind on rock... Anyway I have never tried the set.

I would think a Broadcaster or a Jerry Donahue model would be the ticket; especially if you don't want to shell out the dough for Antiquities. BTW, the Jerry Donahue model is great with distortion.

Yes, Jimmy Page used an old Supro amp with a 15" Jensen speaker to record the first Zep Zep album. I think it might be the Thunderbolt Model, but I'm not sure.

His Tele was a 60's rosewood fingerboard model with the later, post '54 pickups with raised and staggered polepieces for the lead pickup. I've only played the originals in my own original '54 Fender Tele and others...not the Duncan '54 version.

I like the Duncan Antiquity I and Duncan Jerry Donahue better: fatter tone, IMO, with the flatter poles or those that are almost flat but with a slightly raised D & G like the Jerry Donahue and Lindy Fralin Blues Specials with the hybrid stagger. (I have the Fralins in my own '54 Tele...I like them better than the 50 year old originals the guitar came with, tho I like the Duncan Antiquity I and Jerry Donahue as much as the Fralins...they're all a little differant)

Curly plays with his fingers...that's one reason the Antiquity Tele pickups sound so smooth on Curly's clips. They're actually a pretty bright, extremely lively and ballsy pickup. Very harmonically alive and pinch harmonics are a breeze! Very Roy Buchanan like tone, which would make sense: Roy is one of Seymour's favorite Tele players.

Haven't tried the Antiquity II Tele pickups with raised polepieces yet, but I did get a set from the Duncan Custom Shop of the Duncan Hot Tapped Tele lead and Hot neck like Seymour winds for his own Teles...Curly also has a set.

I love the pickups in my three Teles to much to change them for the Custom Shop models tho! Looks like I might be looking for another lightweight 50's style Tele to put the Custom Shop model in!

Might have to sell my last Hamer Monoco to finance it but I'd like to find another Custom Shop Tele with larger frets like my CS '53 RI. Never cared for the Nocaster RI: the frets are to small.
