Pickups for progressive metal/fusion/djent?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for some pickups with exceptional clarity, articulation and good cleans for progressive/fusion applications. They should have good tightness and a good amount of presence without being harsh. They will most probably go into a floyded superstrat. What do you suggest?

Note:

I've used both Full Shreds but ended up pulling them out again. The FS bridge is a great pickup but it always lacked some low end punch when it was required. I might consider it again though since low end isn't my top priority in this case but it would be nice to have something similar with a bit more oomph.

The FS neck was horrible. Waaay too bright. I replaced it with a LiquiFire and got much better results.

Well Periphery's Misha Mansoor uses DMZ ChruchLab/LiquiFire in most of his guitars I believe. Bare Knuckle Aftermaths are designed for Djent. DMZ Steve's Special could be cool cause it has mids pulled back so it might djent very well.

Re: Pickups for progressive metal/fusion/djent?

I take Periphery's brand loyalty with a grain of salt.

Misha used to preach that Djent was best with mid-gain pups. He gets a Dimarzio endorsement and he sticks a hot middy pup in his guitar.

Probably so but this is how endorsement works. People say what the best paying brand tells them to say.

But for some different pups are better for djent. For some it might be mid-gain pups for some it might be middle-heavy pups or whatever. It largerly depends how people work their amps and effects.

What about the Screamin' Demon? Or the PATB-1? Any thoughts on them?

The 'demon is certainly tight enough for djent. What kind of amp are you playing through?

Although not my thing, I have a couple barekuckles pickups at home. The aftermath is about as "djenty" as you can get IMO. Might want to consider BK.

CL is a FS with more low end...not as bright..and more output. Have you thought about running an EQ in the loop of your amp with the 2nd slider bumped up a little? I ran one when I ran FSs and was really happy with the result.

That guy from periphery used to use the BK Cold Sweat at the bridge...
It's like the SD custom...

Re: Pickups for progressive metal/fusion/djent?

I'm playing through a modified ENGL Powerball.

I've heard a lot of good things about Bare Knuckle pickups but they are really expensive... From what I've heard so far, the Aftermath and the Painkiller seem to be the right choice from BK.

Re: Pickups for progressive metal/fusion/djent?

probably a 59/ Custom hybrid. They are pretty much good for anything.

LOL Chuck, you can afford an Engl but you're going to quibble over the price of Bareknuckles!? :9:

How was it modded? The PK is a clanky/twangy mother but for Djent maybe it would be a good pickup. But if you hate bright I would stay away from the Pain Killer. That pickup is my most hated BKP but the Nailbomb and War Pig I have are great. I've tried 4 models of BK and they can all do Djent. I want to try and Aftermath at some point.....
