I'm considering either a Custom bridge/Jazz neck combo or a BKP Painkiller bridge/Black Dog neck combo for a Les Paul studio. I wonder if anyone here uses a low-output "vintage" style neck pickup in the middle position with a high-output bridge pickup for cleans? It would be with a pretty mid-boosted tone.

How the middle selector switch position sounds depends upon what you do with your volume controls.

I like to have them both full on, but I mostly have the tone control full on on the neck pickup. I like the idea of the Painkiller/Black Dog combo because both pickups have a pretty dark sound when played clean, so I think they could work together. I always use some compression on my cleans to tighten up the highs.

I had a similar setup with a jazz neck and alt 8 bridge. With both vol full up, sounded out of phase almost. Very off balance. Can be fixed by rolling the bridge vol down.

I found a YouTube clip of a guy who had a '59 in the neck and an Invader in the bridge. The middle position with a clean tone sounded great to me. That would be the closest comparison to a Black Dog and a Painkiller, I think.
