25's Nemesis
Hey everyone.

I'm posting this to see if I can get any reccomendations on a set of pickups for my '81 Hamer Studio FM. Please feel free to suggest something that isn't in the poll.

The guitar's construction is 3 piece mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard (24.75" scale) mahogany body with a flat maple top, and string through body mounting.

It's a bright, lively sounding guitar unplugged and I would like that to be transferred to the electric realm.

I play in styles similar to STP, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Collective Soul, ZZ Top ( I have my Pearly Gates loaded LP for that).

Oh yeah, I can't fit covered pickups into this beastie and I preffer 4 conductor wiring.

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

I was never crazy about the sound of the JB in the Hamer. Try a set of '59's I've got a JB w/an a-2 magnet in my Hamer Archtop (all mahogany, so it might not compare exactly with yours. otherwise they're the same guitar), and it sounds great to me. I thonk the PG might be too bright sounding.

Might try: 59/Jazz; Seth/Jazz; Custom Custom/PG

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

A Custom in the bridge position and a Screamin' Demon in the neck position.

Not only is this combination compatible, but they are most complimentary too and can pretty much cover all styles.

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

The first of those is what I have, I really like it.

BTW, I've never heard of the 78 model...how is it? What's that like?

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

If it were mine, I'd start with a C-5/Pearly Gates, then go from there if something isn't sounding perfect to me. I really want to try a 78, though.......they just cost too much to buy without hearing it first.

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

whats the difference between the demon and the jb? I've always wondered cause they look comparable on the tone chart.

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

I've voted APII/CC. I haven't tryed it but if I were in your situation It's the combo i'd definitely choose. I've heard many things about it to don't want to try it.

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

Thanks for the suggestions, gents. KMD, the '78 is the Evenly Voiced Harmonics model. ;)

It's supposed to emulate the sound of a certain artist that rose to prominence around 1978. :wall:

It's basically an overwound Alnico II PAF style humbucker with assymetrically wound coils. :burnout:

Totally true , in bright guitar i have C5 bridge and Demon neck , they match perfectly ouput wise and are complementary tonally .

Re: Pickups That RAWK.

Alnico II Pro/Custom...quite a RAWKing set if you ask me (or anyone else on planet Earth).

WHERE the heck is the 59/JB combo?

OK, for those of you just tuning in, I don't like the 59 in the neck. I mean, I really, really don't like it. Some do, but for me, it's boomy, doesn't have enough mids, and has too much treble. :smack:

I am currently giving a JB a test drive in the Hamer, paired with an Alnico II Pro in the neck (that one's staying ;) ).

If the JB doesn't work out, I'll probably go with either a C-5, or just get another Custom.

Hey TO, I've been dying to try the Demon, but I haven't been able to find one in zebra. :blackeye:
