Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

My old Rivera has been sitting out in my garage, completely taken apart, for the last three months. It actually has no grillcloth, period :(.

IDEA!

If I fix it up, I can sell it! :agreed:

This will take inspiration:

And naturally, refreshments:

So, here's the pile-o-parts.

Since grillcloth and piping magically appear when needed, I've decided to skip the "waiting for Fed-Ex to deliver my **** the entire day" pictures.

Starting the piping:

I've placed a mirror underneath so I can see what I'm doing as I go, and keep it as straight and even as possible.

Blah! I've come to a corner, but he is no match for Mr. Straight Razor.

The piping is done, but it took so long that I need some new inspiration. Time for the REAL tunes:

DSCN6599.jpg

I've started the grillcloth's top edge. I've staggered the staples so they have a better hold as I stretch it over the other sides.

At this point, I have run out of staples:

After a short intermission to run up to my friend's house and grab his staple gun, come out, find that we've gotten Indian take out, and devour it, I've finished up the grillcloth:

And the piping:

In the cabinet, with handles installed:

Time to install the speakers! V30's > mah bawls.

In the cabinet:

I've run out of solder, so I'll have to wire these up tomorrow after a trip to Radio Shack.

The completed cabinet:

But wait... something looks off...

A-ha! There we go. Finished!

lol, great job. I wish I had the cash for a 4x12.

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

Way to go! Looks good. I'm about to do that next week to a Marshall 1960b. The piping is fine but I'm going to replace the grillcloth with "Large check" to give in a vintage look. Perhaps I'll post some before and after shots!

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

Great work man.
Next time get some Engl-style steel grill. It might be a lot harder to work with but it's so metal and brutal ;)

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

Beautiful job!

I also like that you used an energy efficient light bulb when you got your idea:laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

yeah, vaultworthy stuff here

Nice job bro. If I needed a 4x12, I'd be all over that like stink on a monkey.

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

oh, what did you use for piping? Just stuff you get at the fabric store?

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

cool, was the cab tolexed already or did you put that on too?

Already tolexed, I didn' have the cash, need, or gusto to do that.

Hell, I replaced the MDF backing baffle last year with 1" marine-grade birch ply, and didn't even bother tolexing that. Just spraypainted it flat black. :laugh2:

Cool that you photographed the process. We should encourage more forum members to pull out the camera when they're doing projects like this. It's good stuff!

I like your mirror trick for adjusting the piping while stapling. That's something that has to be perfect or it looks shoddy. I like that black cloth better than the gray cloth Rivera usually uses.

Re: Picstory: Replacing the Grillcloth and Piping on a 4x12 cab (56k = GTFO!)

Actually, I found the piping didn't have to be ***perfect*** as it was pushed forward and into proper place when the front baffle was screwed on. It still helps to have it right in the first place, though.
