Picture of a LP with 50th Anniversary Engraved Seths

I took a few pictures this weekend, and thought I'd share a pic of my 2001 LP Premium Plus with the 50th Ann. engraved Seth Lovers. They say 50th Anniversary 1955-2005. I really like the look, but the sound is everything you'd expect from Custom Shop Seths. I think Musician's Friend still has them at the discounted price of $250.

Thanks guys! This guitar has been one of my main players since I got it. I'm careful with it, but it's definitely a main player.....I shined'em up before the picture, but I dont care how tarnished those pickups get, I bought them for tone, not the novelty of engraved covers.

At the UGD in Santa Barbara, I let Seymour pick it up and check it out, since he hadn't seen those pickups loaded in a guitar yet. He topped it all off by signing his name on the top of the Gibson case with a magic marker. It makes me afraid of using the case, because I don't want his signature scuffed off. Too bad Mr. Seth Lover wasn't still alive, and at UGD. I would have killed to get his signature next to Seymour's.

Joe...just spray a small amount of clear laquer over the sig, and it will be fine.

I love the way that guitar looks, but I just can't get used to the engraving on the pups. Maybe I'd change my mind if I had a set to install....

BTW...are those the A5 or A2 version?

Agreed...the engraving is just not my thing..I'm sure they sound phenomenal though..and that's a gorgeous Paula, Joe!

I bet if those covers were worn a bit, I'd get over the fact that there's something etched in 'em.

If you're wondering what the difference is between regular production and Custom Shop Seths, I'd presume it's got a little bit to do with the ohms rating. The regular Seths are 8.1K/7.2K. For what it's worth, these ones are 8.5K/7.35K. I bought the A2 set, but the ratings are pretty much the same as a set of Duncan 59's.

I know this is an old thread, but are the AII's bright enough for the bridge position?

He told me the bridge was great, but the neck seemed a little dark to him.

I'm about 95% sure it's honeyburst, I believe the pic is just making it look that color. Thaat's my favorite guitar of his.

I just ordered an AII set from MF, so I will report back. I'm good on the neck position on my R8, but need something with a little more beef in the bridge. The Wagner bridge is only 7.4K, and while it sounds wonderful, it needs a little more 'oomph' for my style of music. Given the reduced price of $200 for the set, I couldn't turn it down particularly since MJ wound them.

Based on Joe's review of the AII, he indicated that it seems like a cross between the Seth and '59 with great dynamics. He said that it wasn't dark and wasn't too bright. I don't like to roll back my tone pots (in any position), so this sounds like it will work well.

Joe or anyone else, is there anything else to add? Has anyone tried the A5 set and found them too bright in the bridge position?

I love the sound of this guitar, with the MJ wound Seths. The bridge is right where it should be, and the neck really sings, but is just a tiny bit dark for my taste. I guess I like 59 necks the most.....a little clearer sounding.
Also, I haven't done anything with the electronics in this guitar, so there might be 300K pots in it....I haven't even checked, to be honest.

If it turns out that all the pots are 300K, I'll probably just change the neck volume and tone to 500K, to open it up a little. I like the bridge tone where it's at.


Oh yeah, and it's a Std. Premium Plus from 2001, in honeyburst AAA flame, w/stock chrome tuning pegs, instead of Klusons. I've got it playing great. When I try LP's at the store, they aren't even close to how this one plays and sounds.

Yeah, it kinda bugs me that I bought them at the new release price, and now they're selling them way too cheap for what they are. Oh well.....at least I really like them enough to leave in that guitar.

For most Les Pauls, do you think the A5 would be too much for the bridge position? I'm wondering (for those old Fillmore tones) if Duane and Betts had really bright bridge pickups and rolled off the tone a bit for that super 'honk' you hear on Hot Lanta and Statesboro Blues. In the quest to nail the Fillmore tone, I'm still searching for the magical bridge pickup that is wound to PAF specs. Some winders have gotten close, but I still haven't tried MJ. Perhaps this is the ticket.

I'm not sure what Duane had in his darkburst, but I get the feeling that he used the range of the knobs to dial in some of his tones with his Marshall. When I play slide, I find myself messing with knob settings, than I do when I'm just wailing on lead or rhythm. Slide guys tend to find those nice tones by backing off the volume and tone, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with the honk of PAF's. Plus, 100W Superleads are so loud, you almost have to learn to ride the volume.

This 10K Brobucker may be the answer, so I'll see how I like it when I get it.
I'm mating it with a nickel 59, and it's going in my gold top. The 50th Ann. Seths will stay in the honeyflame.

After all this exploring and researching, my guess it that Duane's bridge pickup in the Cherryburst (the Darkburst wasn't used for the Fillmore shows) is between 8.3-8.8K.

My question for you is whether you can still work the Tone knob in the bridge position without losing all the highs. Or, is the AII 50th bridge at the right treble EQ on 10? If so, would I need the A5 to better work the tone knob?
