Pictures of The '38 (my new Gretsch)! Utterly spectacular guitar.

Before I commence with photographs, I want to first say that this guitar is inspirationally fantastic. The sound that emits from this is like nothing I've yet heard.

I'm not one to brag about how my guitars sound. They sound like guitars. I'd rather play, look at, fix, buy, sell, smell and taste guitars than hear them - generally. But this one is truly special. My girlfriend has complimented my tone less than 5 times, and last night I was playing along to some stuff (moving from Jazz picking to Elvis picking to Chet picking and even some Setzer stuff of course - and then on to sappy Beatles stuff), and she stopped and was like "wow that sounds really good."

Most acoustics don't sound great to me - we'll start with that. Even super expensive ones I've played, I've never touched or heard an acoustic in person that made me go 'wow.' The bottom sounds nice usually, but it's impossible to find one with a smooth top end. Those tiny strings cannot get the wood moving. And I hate bright acoustics.

Well on The '38, that problem doesn't exist. Those top strings (coming in at $3 each!!!) are happy to oblige you. Fingerpick right on the neck and those strings are as loud as the bass strings. It's pretty phenomenal. Sounds - wouldn't you guess it - like a world class jazz guitar. Funnily enough, I looked in the manual and this guitar is a jazz guitar! World class even! Now I just need to get my friggin skills up to snuff. :) This little baby could get me through a lot of Jazz bars if I could actually play well.

So here's the first picture. More will come, but I was rushed tonight. Thanks for all the support guys! I'm not treating this solely as an investment - this is truly a great playing guitar. Matter of fact, I could easily see it taking nearly all of my time away from everything else - at least for now.

Oh, and I got offered $4,000 for it the other day. All in all a great week!

That's a pretty axe . . . I've always had a thing for those jazz style guitars.

Its no L-7, but its really beuatiful. Love that Blk white photo -classy! Do you do photoshop Bigal? I'd like to see that picture in all black and white, but the pickguard colorised.

lol Thanks guys!

John, color pics are coming! That's an appetite whetter (and a darn good desktop picture...). But yeah, that's more or less a tease until I can get more pictures, which will go in this thread.

I'll get color pics as soon as possible. Man, you gotta see the honeyburst on this! It's insane.

Oh by the way, it's my work computer and I can't remove any icons from the desktop. Lame, huh? Too cluttered for my taste.

You know what I want to do, I want to have a similar photo but keep the burst colorized. Basically the same thing as I did with the Carl Perkins record. I bet that could turn out cool. I'm not sure the pickguard would show up much, not much contrast there. It could though.

Similar to this. And yes, to answer your question, Photoshop and me are buds.

You didn't know it was a Jazz guitar! :smash:You gotta be kidding me. What do you think was big in the late 30s early 40s?

Reminds me of am L-5 or a D'angelico New Yorker without all the eye candy.

If you sell this thing, I guarantee you will need to build a buttkicking machine.

Nice guitar!

Tongue in cheek - :). I knew it was a jazz guitar from the time I typed "Synchromatic" into the eBay search bar a month ago. They're my favorites, and this happens to be one of the coolest Synchros ever built. I've been looking for a good Jazz guitar for about 6 months, one this incredible never crossed my mind.

Not selling it btw. My retirement fund.

I hope the vintage Jazz guitar market doesn't bottom out, due to over-speculation and a glut of subprime clones being produced. ;)

Re: Pictures of The '38 (my new Gretsch)! Utterly spectacular guitar.

When I first came to Europe I brang an Ibanez George Benson Model GB-10 back from the states and even though I've never ever used it live, every time I've picked it up it will inspire me to play different... also the big, fat flatwound strings didn't allow for a lot of bending, but... it forced me everytime to come up with a different approach to what I was playing at the time, so I agree with you: having an special instrument could help you to become a better player.

Any quote on the binding fix yet? Keep us posted, will ya?

One cool thing is that I can still bend pretty easily. There's 12-52 on there, which are big, but for some reason I can bend reasonably well. Good for rockabilly. And yeah, a great instrument can definitely make you better. I'm not sure my playing has gotten any better, more my chord construction. I'm thinking all the time about how to make the chord more interesting. Maybe that constitutes better player? I dunno. Naw, probably not.

And yes sir! Will do about the binding. Thank you. :)

that's a super cool pic man!!! LOVE IT!!!

Re: Pictures of The '38 (my new Gretsch)! Utterly spectacular guitar.

Thanks a lot guys! I took a bunch more pictures, but none of them came out as I had hoped (overexposed) so I'm going back to the drawing board.

But over on the Gretsch Pages, that picture is a pretty big hit (:)). So much so, in fact, that there's talk of it getting into Gretsch's 2009 Calendar. That would be pretty friggin incredible. We'll see. Still, just the talk/idea makes me happy as hell.
