Pimp my bass....looking for pickup ideas.

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I'm looking for pickup ideas to replace the stock pups in a rock maple neck, leaf maple body PJ style bass.

Whatever you suggest, it needs to have a deep bottom and plenty of growl when put through an all tube head. Will primarily be used for metal and punk, but must do a decent blues and blues rock tone.

NO ACTIVES....that'll be for another bass, but not this one.

Also, what are some opinions on the Quarter Pound P-pup?

Is the Quarter Pound J-pup available in bridge only? And is it a good match for the neck Quarter Pound P-pup?

Lastly, opinions on the STC-3M3 EQ module? Will it work with a pair of passive single coils running into it? Does it convert the signal to LowZ?

Re: Pimp my bass....looking for pickup ideas.

I used to have a set of QP Jazz bass pups in a 74 Fender Jazz I used to have and while the bass was a huge piece of **** the pickups kicked ass!!! I really like the tone of that bass (after new pickups) and to be honest as a general rule I don't care for J basses...

Re: Pimp my bass....looking for pickup ideas.

I haven't used any SD bass pickups but I have used the Dimarzio Model-P and Model-J and they are great sounding pickups! A little bit hotter and rounder then stock, hope this helps.

Re: Pimp my bass....looking for pickup ideas.

I'd go with a Hot Stack for Jazz in the bridge and a Hot P in the neck. I heard this combo in a friend's MIM P Deluxe and it sounded great and had very little noise.

This is the standard setup I put in all the P+J basses I build. In your case though, if you are looking for a little more modern sound then consider the QP in the P-BAss spot. The Hot P has great bottom end though and good ouput.

Re: Pimp my bass....looking for pickup ideas.

Is there a reason you guys suggest a QP P with a Hot J and not a QP P&J?

The guitarist in me says it should be the other way around (hot bridge, cooler neck), but I'm listening.....

Hey!

Generally speaking, the bridge pickup in a bass- as far as rock and roll bass sound goes- is auxilliary to the "neck" pickup. Let's talk about the Precision bass. The 1951-1957 version had a single coil pickup in roughly the same position as the current P pickup. It was a good sounding bass. Better than anything else on the market. The Precision pickup has always maintained the same relative position in the scale of the instrument. Think of any lower end Fender (Bronco, Musicmaster), and the same is true, the pickup is in the same relative position. In the case of the Jazz Bass, the "neck" pickup is always in the same place. Even when Fender changed the distances of the Jazz pickups, the distance from the bridge pickup to neck pickup was based off a fixed position of the neck pickup.
