PJ bass pickup swap

I currently own a Fender Deluxe Active Precision Bass Special, used for hoje recording. I find the pickups laço definition, so I'm considering a swap.

I mainly record rock and metal, but softer styles too, so a good versatile solution is what I'm looking for.

Aboard are a standard alnico split single-coil Precision Bass pickup (middle) and a dual-coil ceramic Noiseless Jazz Bass pickup with nickel-plated pole pieces (bridge) with pan pot switching.

Controls are master volume, pan and three-band active EQ with treble boost/cut (+/- 10 db at 8kHz, a shift in the cut frequency, and about a 2dB slope per octave), mid boost/cut (+10dB, -15dB at 500Hz, and a wide band slope) and bass boost/cut (+/- 12db at 40Hz, with a 4dB slope per octave).

I'm thinking SPB-1 Vintage/ STK-J2B Hot Stack, adding an active/passive switch, or the Lightning Rods set, going full active with this choice, still with a traditional sound base.

As you can see, noiseless pickups are a must.

So, what do you thinking?

Re: PJ bass pickup swap

Any vintage-output pickup is a good candidate for an onboard preamp. I like the SPB-1 Vintage, and the STK-J2B, but also consider the Apollo Jazz for the bridge, which is more like a vintage Jazz pickup in tone, but hum-cancelling. It really depends on how much you want the bridge pickup to influence the overall tone.

Re: PJ bass pickup swap

I'd like both pickups to balance each other in the center pan position. I looked at the Apollo, but was afraid it would be underpowered compared to the Vintage P.

By the way, the Vintage P covers have no logo? If I wanted a logo would it have to be a Shop Floor Custom job?

Re: PJ bass pickup swap

In addition to the forementioned, are there major differences in output between the Vintage P, the Hot P and the Quarter Pound P, or are the differences mainly in the way the different pickups are EQ'ed?
