Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

Does anyone have any experience with these? I was gonna go for Fender Deluxe, but then I saw that these take all the tools out of string changes. Can anyone speak to their quality and reliability?

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I've used them before, and would get them again. It is a great idea, and its a wonder why it took so long. The means of stringing a guitar is archaic, and these make it easier.

I’ve installed a few sets on customers guitars. They work really well. The only thing I didn’t like was the button shape. But that wouldn’t stop me from using them.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I assume the buttons can be replaced with the stock ones on my Strat? And would anyone happen to know if the unit comes apart so I could electroplate the posts in chrome?

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

Used to have them. They were solid and reliable. The ratio was nice too. I prefer them to Sperzels, TBH.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I put a set on my Ehdwuld L.P.
As they reach the point to cut off, they get noticeably harder to turn This is your cue to grab the string so you don't have to dig it out of the carpet

If you pull it tight and lock it down, you will have trouble restringing it with those same strings

I like mine, not sold on another set but these work fine

You want 6 inline for your Fender
Is it North American made or Asian Fender
The Sqires have a closer pin orientation than the Mexican or American Fender
They do line up with the Carvin/Kiesel locking tuners tho

If you have the Mexican or American you can drop in the two pin version I posted in your other thread

If you want something less expensive the ones I linked here are 18 :1 and come in black and inline
If that's your preference.

Umm I wouldn't do that

If you want them chrome/chrome
Buy them that way

You're making way too difficult

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

That's what was looking at earlier, I'll guess I'll have to choose between form and function. But does anyone know if Planet Waves tuners can take the knob that comes on my stock MIM tuners? I'd assume so, but I wanna be sure.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I believe so
It looks to be the standard 3 mm with two flats the all the rest have

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

Great tuners. I've used nearly a dozen without a problem. They work wonderfully and they look gorgeous (especially the gold/black ones).

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

They actually my favorite tuners. Have them installed in some of my guitars, although I have some fitted with Sperzels and others with Grovers.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I have several styles of locking tuners the most common is Grovers

Fender, Ping, two sets of Grover wit the Sperzel style knob
One set of Grovers with top locking Gotoh style locks thanks to a forum bro
One set of Gotoh top lockers on my Hummingbird
Planet Waves on Blue Ehdwuld branded Vanity guitar
An Allparts set slated for the Dean Shire
A pearl knob set of Allparts lookalike for the daughter's ERI LP
A Carvin branded set on the RG2
A cheap black set from Guitarpartsonline.com that are the worst
They don't slip or anything, just when I change strings, the knob aint connected to the pin
And I have to pry it open every time. Junk

I put Musiclilly tuners from Amazon on some for friends
They are particular in where you put them
You'll need to check to see which pins drive up the furthest
And use those on the skinny strings

I have ordered some other sets that I haven't install yet
When they come in I can give a clearer picture of what I think of those

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

I'm curious about these tuners as well. How does the auto cutting work? Is it forgivable, say you tune up too much because you had a beer and then go back. Is the string cut too short by then? Or do you control when it needs to cut?
Looking at these to replace the tuners on my Chapman Ghost fret if they will fit.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

You simply lock the tuner and then start to tune and after you rotate it past a certain point it clips the string. The exit of the tuner is lower than the entrance so it won't accident ally clip the wrong end, but if you pull the string too tight and it clips the string, you've wasted the string if you find it too tight.

Re: Planet Wave Auto-Trim Tuners?

If you don't start the string at the right side of the hole, it will cut it too short

The tuners have a nib on top to align your entry point
The hole is angled to put the exit in front of the cutter

If you string it backwards, it will cut it too short

But I like to slack the strings to clean the fretboard or change the bridge or pickups
You have to plan for these things

If you pull it taunt, lock it down
It only has to go 1/3 of a turn to be cut
So it ain't much slack

The high e on mine didn't catch good. And trimmed short
I was unable to re-use it
