Play bass through bass and guitar amps

I have been planning on splitting my bass signal and playing through a bass amp and a guitar amp at the same time (bass amp signal clean, guitar amp signal fuzzed to the max). I know guitar speakers are not designed to push the low bass frequencies, but I am planning on cutting the frequencies below 120Hz for the guitar amp. Would this keep me from blowing the speakers?

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

biamp from the bass amp
come into the guitar amp thru the FX return bypassing the preamp

oh does your bass amp have a crossover?
if so
then the above applies

i would still avoid the preamp of the guitar amp

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

I already built a loop pedal with a high pass filter switch in it. Why should I avoid the guitar preamp? I just want to make sure I won't damage the guitar speakers.

FWIW dUg (Or whatever he's calling himself these days) Pinnick does that I believe. I seem to remember an interview years ago where he said he used a crossover and sends his upper freq's straight into the front end of a Marshall half-stack.

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

Chris Squire got his classic driven sound by playing through a Marshall guitar stack. I managed a passable impersonation of it when, out of abject laziness, I DI'd a 4001 bass part through the exact same signal chain as the guitar.

Robert DeLeo uses a similar setup in the studio. His clean signal goes through a Fender Bassman into a 1x15, while his dirty signal goes through a 50W Marshall guitar stack. The interview didn't say anything about EQ, but I'd guess he's rolling lows off the guitar amp.

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

I tried it at practice today and it worked well. The speakers didn't appear to be driven too hard cutting below 120Hz (they barely moved). The only problem was the guitarist said I was too loud. I don't see this as a problem. [emoji12]

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

Even rolling off below 120 wont get rid of them entirely unless using a crossover.

Your not going to damage the amp, just the speakers.is it a guitar head or combo? And I don't see the point of bypassing the guitar amp preamp, isnt that half the point?

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

It's true, but if you look at the waveform, the amplitude is dramatically reduced to a level that I couldn't imagine damaging the speakers. It's a head and a 4x12. I used an MXR 10 Band in the loop to cut the frequencies. I watched the speakers very closely during practice (front was uncovered) and they seemed to move less than when I play my guitar tuned to C standard.

Re: Play bass through bass and guitar amps

Would the amp be able to handle the frequencies if you play through a guitar head but a bass cab? Robert Trujillo uses a Marshall 800 head, I know, but I don't know if he uses a guitar cab r not

The amp would be fine since the concern is that the low frequencies would blow guitar speakers. A bass cabinet would be safe to play through and may even sound good provided that it didn't have a horn. When playing with distortion horns tend to get harsh and gritty.

That's what I was thinking. It seems we're always worried about speakers blowing, but if we play a 4x12 bass cab with a Marshall head, that would probably sound pretty badass.
