Played a Super Sonic today

Popped into one of the local shops today and he had a blonde 112 combo. Having heard such great things about it here I had to play it for a min. Wonderful amp!!! Plugged a MIM strat into it and really enjoyed myself. Only complaint is, it is way too much amp for my skill set lol. The dirt was awesome and the vibrolux setting was sweet. But the bassman setting was pure perfection. Just warm and buttery in all the best ways!!! Hope everyone has a good nite.

Have you tried the Super Sonic 22? Perhaps it would be more suitable to your needs.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

I have a Super Sonic 60 combo that was on clearance at the local Sitar Center. Great sounding amp, especially on the clean Vibrolux/Bassman side. I kind of expect an amp like this to be 2x12, but I suppose the 1x12 is intended to stay true to the vintage side of the equation. It sounds great regardless.

Unfortunately, mine has some problems. When it warms up, it occasionally emits a loud BRAAAAKKKKLE through the power section, unaffected by turning down the master. Went online and read a ton of bad reviews slamming these on reliability and build quality. Mainly poor solder joints and brittle PCBs that are difficult to work on.

It turns out that my clearance amp had been sent out for service by the store a few times already. I'm having it looked at now to see if it can be saved. I really hope it can, because it is a great-sounding amp with a lot of flexibility when it works.

The 22W head version looks like it could be very good also. If you get a good one, these are great amps. If you get a dud, send it back.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Anyone try the Super Sonic 2x12 cab yet? V30's at 8 Ohms. My local dealer doesn't have one.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

I'm torn between the Super Sonic 22 and a Mesa Lonestar Special for my next amp purchase (granted, that will be 8-12 months down the road).

New they are both overpriced for the build quality in particular the SS. I once owned a Blond SS head and it was a nice rig that I found very usable. However for just a little more money one can step up to a Zinky Blue velvet and the Zinky is in a whole other class!!!
I sold my SS and used the funds to buy a used 25 watt Zinky Blue Velvet and have never looked back!

I had a the 22 for 2 days:)... but then the drive channel went. I didnt replace it.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Have had my 22 for a year now....
Totally love it!
It gets played about a whole lot.....almost everyday.
Changed the speaker to a Celestion G12H 70's Anniversary just for fun, kept it though...
Stuck a long three spring reverb in there as well, just to hear it, it got stuck as well....
Like it stock plenty as well....just makes it abit more nice with the speaker and the three spring tank....

I have been thinking about a super sonic. My local shop has a blonde SS 22 I may cruise over there this weekend and give it a try.

I've never been blown away by Zinky's amps. They are great, but not enough so to justify the price to me at this point in my life. If I were to buy either the SS or the Lonestar Special, I would most definitely be getting them used.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Just to note, Zinky used to work at Fender in the early 90's. He was responsible for the Pro Sonic and the Custom Vibrolux Reverb (still in production).

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Oh, I know. I've played through a Pro Sonic before, and while I thought it was nice, I wasn't blown away, which is kinda how I feel about the Dr Z stuff.

The price point on the Zinky stuff is not much over the SS and Lonestar and the build quality light years ahead of both.

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Well.....taste do not care much about "buildquality"....and what ever that means?

Try a TRANSFERABLE LIFETIME WARRANTY on the Zinky on for Bruce's confidence in his build quality!!
Build quality and bullet proof reliability means a heck of a lot to guys like me that play out 4 to 5 nights a week:cool2:!

Re: Played a Super Sonic today

Exactly. And FWIW, I'm not a huge fan of the Prosonic either.

A Velvet or Mofo is not a Prosonic not even close. The reason Bruce left Fender is they were cutting so many corners in production on his designs. If you want to see Bruce's best work at Fender play a Tone Master or Vibro King:naughty:

Nothing is bulletproof on a tubeamp;)

A high end tube amp like the Zinky is MUCH more reliable than any SS amp will be on the road! Just forget to plug your speaker cable into a SS head a couple times and see what happens:eek::flush: .
If they weren't you would see the big boys running more SS.

Really? From what I understand, it doesn't hurt a solid state amp to run it without a speaker.
