I rarely get the chance to play some half decent tube amps in my area. Pretty much every store in my town only ever stocks Marshall DSL401 combos or maybe a Fender Twin reissue. The rest is crappy Marshall MG and AVT or Fender SS crap. Not even the local Mesa Boogie certified service store carries a single Boogie product.
Anyways today I went into my fav of the stores to screw around with some MIM Teles and look at some cheap practice amps. Low and behold they have one of the new Fender Supersonic combos and a Marshall 1974x handwired combo, both of which I have been interested in trying.
The Fender was a killer amp. I really enjoyed this one. It had the typical Fender cleans, nice and full with some shimmer. The dirt channel also impressed me at the relatively low volume I played it at. I set it to a nice bluesy setting and fooled around for awhile and then cranked the gain some more and went wild. This channel could definitely stand on its own but with a nice OD pedal out front it would really shine. I would love to have this amp as a nice practice combo. The tones I got at bedroom volumes were very nice.
The Marshall was also very nice (to be expected considering the price $2400 CDN). The clean was very full and round. Different from the Fender but still very nice. I cranked this sucker a little more than the Fender and it started to break up nicely. I didn't get a chance to try any decent pedals with this but can only imagine the tonal bliss that could be had with a nice OD pedal in front of this beauty.
Any one else have opinions on these two amps?
Also what would be a decent practice amp for under $300-400?
