Wimp!

Use yer fingers. A few drops of blood on the strings will not spoil their tone. :D

Re: playing bass f***in hurts my hand

Try using a heavier pick so you don't have to hit as hard. You could also try flatwounds.

I use dunlop green .88 bass picks and round strings.... I'll see...

its more of the sense that i'm playing then my hand keeps cramping up

Re: playing bass f***in hurts my hand

Oh. I thought you meant "mechanical abrasion" of your spare fingers. :D

When I use a pick, it's all downstrokes too. Tortex greens are mediums; they are pretty floppy, and tend to lead you toward hitting too hard IME. I use the Tortex blue or purple picks. There is no really great solution to cramping from doing that other than repetition. Try to use your arm more than flopping your wrist, and you don't have to have an iron grip on the pick. Also, try holding the pick with your index and middle fingers, not just the index. The triangle picks can help too, as they are larger. Plus they last three times as long as a regular pick, because you can just flip to a new point when one wears out. The right strap length is essential too.

play with your fingers, ya pansy.

Don't say if Lemmy can do it so can you, Lemmy only does it because he's Lemmy and Lemmy can do whatever the fawk Lemmy wants to!

Ah, learning bass when coming from guitar. I did that back around 2005. You really do have to relearn how to play - and by that I mean your strumming or rhythm hand. I used to really be a basher on guitar - like just crank away on it. I learned very quickly the hard way that you can't just smash away on bass. I even had to stop moving around so much on stage because I had to think more about HOW I was playing, not so much what I was playing on the fret board.

Just dial it back and think more about consistency in your attack. Don't worry, it'll come with a bit of time. Just know that you'll become a better player overall because of it! I found that after a few years of playing bass full time, my guitar skills actually improved. I had a much deeper understanding and appreciation of rhythm and groove. It's also more difficult on bass because if you f*** up, you have nothing to hide behind. People may not really pay a lot of attention to the bass, but boy does it stand out when the bassist screws up. Sloppy technique is really easy to hide on guitar - not on bass.

Sounds like you're holding the pick too tight.
Loosen up a bit and just use the edge of the pick for the attack.

And don't worry about playing like Lemmy, just muck with it and find your own approach.

Re: playing bass f***in hurts my hand

sounds like you are gripping too hard and picking too hard. Try to make a conscious effort to notice any muscular tension in your hand, forearm and the rest of your body as you play. Once you are aware of the tension, you can take steps to reduce or eliminate it. Guitars and basses are created by people for people. If it hurts to play then you are doing it wrong. Patience, sensitivity and self awareness will fix it.
