Please forgive my noobery, but...pickup swap time!

I'm looking to upgrade the pickups in my Agile 2800DLX Paul copy. They sound great, but I'm always looking for something better. I've been looking at GFS pickups and have really only heard good things about 'em. Anyone have experience w/ GFS? I'm after those classic 'bucker tones - Allman Brothers, a little ZZ Top, Pagey tones on the bridge, and thick but clear jazzy tones on the neck. But especially Allman Bros - if you've seen the Beacon Theatre DVD, those are the tones I'm after.

I've been looking at the SD Pearly Gates, Alnico Pro IIs, and a few in the GFS line.

No experience with GFS, but I do have a set of Pearly Gates in a Les Paul and they are GREAT pups for blues and classic rock. They will get your Allman Brothers, ZZ Top and Zep tones.

yeah a PG set would smoke ... of course, so would a set of 59s ... AIIPs are wonderful ... a bit more subdued than the PG ... maybe a tiny bit better for the jazzier side of things

but you can't go wrong with these - especially if can you try some and send em back under the guarantee program if they dont fit your needs quite right

sorry, no experience with teh gfs

Re: Please forgive my noobery, but...pickup swap time!

Anyone else have experience with any of the pups mentioned?

The Alnico 2 Pros are going to have a sweeter tone than the PGs. The Alnico 2 Pros are going to have a bell like high end.

never tried the gfs, sorry

if you want allmans tone look at the antiquitys, both derek and warren have used/still use them but it also makes a huge difference what the rest of your rig looks like. a gibson with antiquitys into a cranked fender is a great sound even if you dont have dereks chops

warren has some pearlys too and they are one of my favorite pups. an antiquity neck with a pearly gates bridge would be a very cool combo. warm smooth silky neck tone with a hotter more biting bridge. the pg neck is a killer pup as well, it just isnt as full sounding as the antiquity.

Re: Please forgive my noobery, but...pickup swap time!

+1 for a PG/PG or maybe an APH1/PG

Re: Please forgive my noobery, but...pickup swap time!

Think I might go for a dual PG setup. I can't find a price for the Antiquity humbuckers, though - I imagine they're outta my range, anyway.

For the tones I'm after, what would be better - PGs or APIIs? I'm running the Agile into a 70s Traynor YBA-1A (Bassman/Plexi tones). I know *nothing* about SD's pickups...thanks everyone for your input!

Re: Please forgive my noobery, but...pickup swap time!

I'm thinking PG's-and don't be afraid to use the tone if you want to smooth the top a bit.

Or A2P/59

Or...You may really dig this: PG/CC. That's my go to classic rock guitar...It's what the classy tone gurus use!

Egad...I wish there was a place where I could have the same guitar wired with different pickups so I could hear them all. :-/ Too many choices, but I'm sure whatever I pick will have a good sound.

The good thing about the SD soundclips is that they are with the same guitars, amps, settings, etc.

The bad thing about the clips is they all sound crappy and the same through my computers speakers....

If you hang outr here long enough you'll be able to swap pups in between tracks on the average CD...Jump on in and get wet: All of those recs are cool; Just can't say which one will really be the one for you with your guitar/amp/effects/ears and livingroom carpet/drapes in the end!
