PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

X-Files Duckbucker
GUYS, I NEED YOUR POWERFUL AMP KNOWLEDGE!!!

BUDGET: $800 or less I could stretch this if I buy in-store and I can do a trade-in, trade-up deal (maybe $950?) but I would prefer to stay under the $800 mark.
WANTS: ALL TUBES! No solid-state this go around. 2-3 channels, footswitch, reverb is a must-have, and VERSATILITY! I want some great cleans (I own 3 Fender amps), and some crushing distortion (why I won't buy a 4th). I want to be able to play classic rock, hard rock, alternative, heavy rock, and some Megadeth-style metal! I would really relish the ability to dial back the gain and get a smooth, sweet overdrive too (SRV style). I'm not a fan of that loose-sounding distortion that sounds fuzzy when you palm-mute. I love good cut, giving you that early-Metallica and Megadeth style sharp crunch!
POWER: I have a 100 watt solid state head and it's too much. I'd like 50-65 watts max, preferably with a power switch to knock it down. My 100 watt-er is killing my ears right now. I am kinda uncomfortable with less than 40, but some amps are loud even at 25. But 25 is the bare-minimum for me. Remember I'm playing through a 4X12 cab, so a little goes a long way.

THE CONTESTANTS: Mainly two.
Egnater Renegade 65w Head I put it through its paces the other day at GC and it was pretty sweet. I thought the clean channel could've been better. What worries me is I hear rumors of unreliability. My amp tech says he's not an Egnater fan from the repair point of view, and I have been told that in the tone dept, I could do better.

Carvin V3m head 50w Seems pretty nice for the price, but I haven't heard one in-person. It's tough to do anyway considering Carvin is sells factory-direct. Still, I read GREAT reviews and from the clips I've heard it sounds awesome. But those are clips and not definitive. i am a little concerned it can't give me sweet overdrive or bone-crunching, tight-bottomed, cutting metal. IF ANYONE HERE HAS ONE OR HAS PLAYED ONE THIS IS WHAT I MOSTLY NEED HELP WITH! The price is great and I get 10 days with it. If I'm not happy, I can return it.

Somone suggested the Mesa Boogie Trans-Atlantic TA-15, but it's bare bones. I played one and the clean was incredible. i could not for the life of me get the dirty channel to give me enough gain. Plus... no reverb.

PLEASE HELP ME HERE!!! Right now, I'm leaning towards the Carvin. If you fellas have other ones to suggest, please do so. ANY help is much appreciated.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

Can't help you with the Carvin, but being that you like Fender's clean, have you tried the Super Sonic 22? Now available in Head form...at the top end of your in-store budget. Quite a different "gain" channel from the more classic Fenders. Since you frequent a GC, give one a try.

Good suggestion. I've played it. The cleans are awesome like I expect from Fender, but the distortion is thick and muddy to my ears. No edge, or cut so to speak that gives a palm-muted riff definition. I'd love to try out a Machete but WAY outta my price range. Still, thanks for the idea. If i hadn't already played it, I'd be heading out to try it now.:yourock:

I had a Carvin V3 100 watt. I liked it a lot and used it for 5 years, and was about to get the V3M, but wanted a change and went with an EVH 5150 III 50 watt

All over the Carvin boards they regard the V3M as easier to dial in a good tone than the V3 due to the lack of the master global EQ, which I found a pain on the V3

If you want brutal Mesa type metal tone, the Carvin does it better than a Mesa. It has great cleans , especially with the reverb they just added. My problem is it really didnt cover classic rock too medium gain settings too well, it sounded like it was suffocating and wanted the gain maxed out. So the 3 channel concept isn't executed well, you'll have one great clean tone, one insane metal tone, but I couldn't really get a middle ground tone, which I have with the EVH 5150 III 50 watt, and seems to be executed well with the Carvin Legacy 3. Also, the V3 didn't clean up too well with guitar volume adjustments, whereas it did on the EVH and Legacy

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

Why not Carvin Legacy???? Great cleans, great dirty channel. Can be found on Ebay used for between $450-$550! I just checked. Head or combo!

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

I'd be looking at the Legacy 1 or 3. Not the 2.

Or the new EVH 5150 50 watt.

I'd try to find them used.

Haven't heard any of them but I've studied the Youtube videos and read up on them when I was interested a few months ago.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

One of Lew's suggestions would probably be your best bet!

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

You might try an Engl Thunder 50w head as well. There's one on ebay for $800 right now. I don't know what the cleans are like but the Engl distorted sound is freaking amazing.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

I didnt care for how compressed the V3M sounded and after about 6 months I let it go. Might just have been EL84s and me not getting along. Now that carvin mini legacy...

Also might consider the marshall new run of DSLs. Havent heard them yet, only heard about them.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME PICK AN AMP HEAD! CARVIN?

I would look for a used JVM 205H
- 50 watts
- 2 channels / 6 modes
- reverb
- clean, crunch, high gain tones
