Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

I have a 1984 Les Paul Standard. I'm the original owner, the guitar came with Shaw's which I took out and loaded with Duncan JB/59 in the early 90's.

Recently I decided I wanted a more traditional Les Paul tone.

The JB: cleans are kinda lack luster no longer care for the mid spike

59 neck: top end is nice but too much low end also a bit too punchy would like something sweeter in the neck

I'm looking for low to medium winds with the following qualities
bridge - open, clear and uncompressed, but not bright or harsh
neck - sweet with out having too overbearing low end or too dark high end

So Far here's what I've tried

Bridge 70's Gibson stamped T-Top: open and clear which I really liked only problem was it was very very bright -- like Esquire steely bright

Neck 80's Gibson Shaw: in the neck was not boomy on the lows like the Duncan '59 and it was not as punchy which also was nice -- but it seemed a bit dark or unclear in the high end.

I guess I can't tell if the Shaw was really dark or it was just that the T-Top was too bright

Currently have a set of WCR Fillmore's (uncovered) loaded

Fillmore neck is sweeter than the Duncan '59 and doesnot have the low end bloat and it has a criper focus on the high end than the Shaw in the neck. In between positoin sound really great too.

I'm not crazy about the Fillmore bridge pup by itself -- It's much better than it is still a bit too compressed, very punchy and plump in the mids. It's not as open and clear sounding as the T-Top. The Fillmore bridge sounds better driven than clean.

Mounting plate is gone, pots are CTS 500K all around and caps are green chicklets with # 20223 printed on them.

I'm playing through an Ampeg Reverberocket 2, Fender Vibro Champ and Fender Showman all set fairly cleanish or on the verge of overdrive and using fuzzface and tonebender style fuzz and Keeley modded TS and Blues driver pedals.

I like tones like
Allman Brothers Band - especially the cleaner sounding studio stuff like Blue Sky, Jessica
Mick Taylor
Mick Ronson
Paul Kossoff

Thanks

you may like seths, though i'm just throwing that up since i don't really have much experience with them. i'd also suggest putting some orange drop capacitors in there. if your tone caps are the same ones that i've had before, get rid of them. they're horrible. cts pots are great though. another set you may like if your looking for a clear, open sound is the jazz/jazz set. similar to the 59 but without the boom and a bit more articulate.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

You have to remember that those recordings you're listening to are going through mics, compressors, and preamps, etc. - which means transformers and tone circuits that alter the sound. So it's good to remember that you're not going to sound like the record.

It sounds like you're pretty happy with the neck Fillmore.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

For the neck, a JazzN sounds like what you want, A5 bright & sweet, without the excess bass.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

Sounds like a set of Alnico II Pro's might fit the bill. The sound you decribed sounds alot like what my LP Standard with Alnico II Pro's in it sounded like. The Seths would also be a good choice.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

If you still have that T-Top, throw it in the neck, and get a Seth Lover or A2Pro for the bridge. Check your pot values, too.

+1 i have both the neck and bridge A2pro in my les paul classic and I love them. The best blues clean sound you've ever heard (or at least ive heard from a humbucker.) lol and they can growl and snarl for when you need to rock out! :D

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

Alnico II Pro's an a Pearly Gates set are my recommendations.

Yes, I have tried them, BTW.

I second this .... or possibly Pearly Gates.

Yes, I still have the T-Top. It only has 5" of braided lead so I'll have to see if my tech can extend the lead wire to fit it into the neck slot. Pots are all CTS 500K

+1. This seems to be forgotten most of the time.

Completely understand that. Not really chasing any ones particular tone.

I just need a bridge pickup that is open, clear, airy without being too bright and a neck pickup that is neither too boomy on the lows or too dark on the highs.

T-Top - too bright in bridge
Shaw - too dark, mellow in neck
Fillmores - a little bit too punchy and compressed

I'm going to play with the hight of the Fillmores a bit. Right now the neck is sunk just below the ring and the pole piecs are raised. I'm going to try lowering the bridge a bit

Pearly Gates neck has more mids and less bass than a '59n, along with bright but not piercing highs. For bridge, I think that Seth Lover would be a good choice.

Phat Cat?

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

Pearly gates neck is the only way to go.

Bridge, teh 59 or Jazz is nice.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

If you like the neck, leave it alone. Look into the AII Pros, Seth Lovers or if you have the money an Antiquity for the bridge.

Re: Please help with some Les Paul pickup suggestions

Another vote for an A2P bridge and the shaw in the neck with an A5 if it doesn't already have one. Also, consider trying a 498T with an A2 or A4 in the bridge. For that matter, try a 490R with an A2 or A4 in the bridge.
