I have a 1984 Les Paul Standard. I'm the original owner, the guitar came with Shaw's which I took out and loaded with Duncan JB/59 in the early 90's.
Recently I decided I wanted a more traditional Les Paul tone.
The JB: cleans are kinda lack luster no longer care for the mid spike
59 neck: top end is nice but too much low end also a bit too punchy would like something sweeter in the neck
I'm looking for low to medium winds with the following qualities
bridge - open, clear and uncompressed, but not bright or harsh
neck - sweet with out having too overbearing low end or too dark high end
So Far here's what I've tried
Bridge 70's Gibson stamped T-Top: open and clear which I really liked only problem was it was very very bright -- like Esquire steely bright
Neck 80's Gibson Shaw: in the neck was not boomy on the lows like the Duncan '59 and it was not as punchy which also was nice -- but it seemed a bit dark or unclear in the high end.
I guess I can't tell if the Shaw was really dark or it was just that the T-Top was too bright
Currently have a set of WCR Fillmore's (uncovered) loaded
Fillmore neck is sweeter than the Duncan '59 and doesnot have the low end bloat and it has a criper focus on the high end than the Shaw in the neck. In between positoin sound really great too.
I'm not crazy about the Fillmore bridge pup by itself -- It's much better than it is still a bit too compressed, very punchy and plump in the mids. It's not as open and clear sounding as the T-Top. The Fillmore bridge sounds better driven than clean.
Mounting plate is gone, pots are CTS 500K all around and caps are green chicklets with # 20223 printed on them.
I'm playing through an Ampeg Reverberocket 2, Fender Vibro Champ and Fender Showman all set fairly cleanish or on the verge of overdrive and using fuzzface and tonebender style fuzz and Keeley modded TS and Blues driver pedals.
I like tones like
Allman Brothers Band - especially the cleaner sounding studio stuff like Blue Sky, Jessica
Mick Taylor
Mick Ronson
Paul Kossoff
Thanks
