Please help!!!!!!!!

metaled

New member
Hello to everyone!!! I`m new here and need some help! I will be changing pickups in my guitar and i can`t decide between Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio!!! I am a metalhead all the way but i also enjoy decent tone. I have it narrowed down to Duncan Distortion (b) and Pearly Gates or Jazz in the neck. For DiMarzio the Super Distortion (b) and PAF Pro (n). I am not clear as to the output of the DD or Super D but i`d prefer the more powerful sounding pickup. I want that heavy palm mute crunch sound as well as killer harmonics! I actually tried the Super Distortion in a guitar at a music store and really liked it. I never came across a Duncan Distortion in any guitar anywhere so i cant make a comparision that way which is really my dilema. Also i want to stay passive which is why i havn`t mentioned EMG`s!!!Any help i would really appreciate! Thanks!!!! :)

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

Well, you'll probably get a strong bias towards Duncan here. And with me posting, you'll get a stong bias toward the Distortion. That pickup is my personal favorite. It will handle all of your metal needs. Match it up with a Jazz in the neck and you've got an incredibly verstile tone machine (plus it's the same setup Randy Rhoads used in his Jackson).

Do a search for the Distortion and you'll probably find any number of my posts on it. I've provided a number of reviews on the tone.

By the way, welcome to the board.

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

The DD and Jazz are a great combo!! The custom is excellent the the bridge also. I really like the Dimarzio super D and the paf pro combo also. BTW, Randy Rhodes used a DD but, he did use a Dimarzio super distortion also. I say its a toss up. There is no right or wrong brand but, there is a right and wrong tone for you. You already like the Super Distortion so, go for it. I would try something with a distortion in it to be fair though.

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

theodie.....well thats my main problem....i can`t find anything that has a DD in it to compare to the Super D! I`ve tried all the local music stores in my area and no one has any guitars with the DD in it! Does anyone know of any guitars that comes stock with DD in it? But thanks for the advice everyone!!!!

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

Doesn't SD still offer a 30 warranty?

You could buy one, install it, and if it doesn't meet your requirements, you can return it.

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

Sorry. 21 day exchange. According to this link,

http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/support/faqdescr.shtml#exchange

"What is your exchange policy?

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

yes, exchange not refund. still a very cool policy

Re: Please help!!!!!!!!

The SD is going to have a thicker low end, more focused mids, and a warmer top, with more upper mid bite ... the DD is going to be more open sounding, a brighter top, less of the upper mids, but still plenty of teeth (the SD sometimes fools people because of the way the highs are rolled back), and a punchy low end, not quite as thick, but still plenty of punch ... the DD seems to be a bit crunchier on the low end (more definition if you will).
Bear in mind I had a very limited experience with the DD, but that's the way I saw it. you might want to decide on your bridge first, and then match up the neck later. The Paf Pro is going to have a bit more filtery growl to it, than the Jazz, the Jazz will be a bit glassier, the low end will be a bit clearer (still warm though) than the Paf Pro ... again that was a brief experience with the Jazz in a music store ( the guy there had his guiatr there with him).
Maybe the others can be more concrete on it, and more accurately detailed.
