Please listen and comment

Hey everyone,

Here is a song that I've been working on, I posted a real rough version a little while back and have since put a simple bass line in and tweaked the e.q. on the drums and guitars. I am working a solo part out now but I want your feedback on it so far, any and all critisism is welcome. Please comment on the sounds, the mix, the song in general...anything. THis is all about learning for me and not artistic pride so....let her rip.

It's the "rough draft 1 song"

Thanks a lot !

Scott

Re: Please listen and comment

Around the 2 minute mark, there is a prime spot for a solo. Other than that, the recording quality is obviously not great, and everything sounds appropriately weak/fuzzy/hazy.

That being said, it's a cool song! Really cool. I like the guitar, and I like the drums for the most part. I'd make them a tiny bit quieter. I'd add a more present bass. But it sounds cool! Nice tone!

Re: Please listen and comment

Thanks for listening! Yea, the recording quality is something I'm trying to figure out, the bass and drums were all midi, I mic'd my amp for the guitars so that must be where that fuzzy/hazy stuff is coming from. I'm finding it a real challange getting a good mic'd guitar sound but it's something I want to learn. I can't seem to get a good "in your face" type sound. The drums are usable but a little on the simplistic side I guess.

Not to hijack my own thread but how much does the room effect the sound of a close mic'd amp? I'm talking Audix i5 right on the grill. If it's negligable then it must be my amp settings huh?

Re: Please listen and comment

Once the guitars are recorded compressing them helps a lot towards "in your face" also keep them free of reverb, maybe just a touch and a touch of delay on single note lines and also on some chording if it works.

Re: Please listen and comment

I thought the guitars sounded great. Maybe compared to today's recordings it doesn't sound as high quality, but it reminds me a lot of Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love album (original mix) and I love the sound of that record. Raw and in your face. Not much we all can do about the midi drums, but they are straight ahead, simple and pretty much fits the song. They may be a bit too loud in the mix though. Can't wait to hear the finished version. This is a kickin tune that had me boppin my head around.

Re: Please listen and comment

Hey thanks a lot for the responses!

I'll try some compression on the guitars. I recorded them with no reverb and just a little delay from the amp. I listened back to it and found that a lot of the mushyness is coming from the fact that when I doubled the guitar line, my playing was a little off.

75lespaul, thanks for the very kind words, I'm going to drop the snare a bit in the mix and see how it sounds.

Thanks again for the responses!

Re: Please listen and comment

Good guitar sounds, very nice. Song is cool. Drums are boring and uncreative (should that be expected of programmed drums? --nah!). At about 3:00, you started losing my interest...cool ending, though!

:55 and/or 2:00 should cue the lead in for a lead melody/solo.

Nice work!

Re: Please listen and comment

I'm not one to talk about professional recording but ......

I think that the eq needs to be adjusted on the guitar part. The recording as whole could be mixed better ....the drums are too up front I don't really even hear the bass.

I can tell if it was mixed differently it would sound much better.....oh and of course throw in some earth shattering guitar solos too:)

Other than that I liked it.....good job...........can't wait to hear the final version.

Re: Please listen and comment

Man this is great feedback guys! Exactly what I was hoping for. The general concensus is that the drums are boring and too loud ( a perfect combination ), bass needs to be more defined and recheck the mix. Oh and throw in some "earth shattering guitar solos" uhhh...we'll have to see on that one. I really appreciate you'all taking the time to listen and give me your feedback!

Re: Please listen and comment

You got some good feedback here. I thought the bass sounded fine, but I was listening on little speakers and maybe mine bring out the bass more? Guitarist put it well too. I was talking about the sound of the drums, but even though I think the beat fits the song, you could liven up the drums as well with some tasty rolls and fills etc...

I personally hate the drum part of recording. It usually takes me anywhere from one to three days to do just the drums. It's not the beats really that take up my time, but programming the fills, the rolls, the slight differences in the beat for some measures, changing what I don't like, LOL. I usually don't like loops so I do it manually.

And RIP OFF SOME SOLOS!!!!!

But mostly, just have fun. You've got a good song so far.

Re: Please listen and comment

Overall, I dug it. If it were my tune, I would add a little movement between the chords to build anticipation and to make it feel like it was going somewhere, if you know what I mean. Doing it with the guitar part seems too predictable to me, so I would probably do it with more of a walking bass line. I like the tune as is, but you asked what I would do.

Re: Please listen and comment

so it was a boring version of Judas priest till 1:30 ,than something happend and you began to show your real guitarist in you, this is the best part of the song.If you think to let somebody sing on it ,that's another story tho!!!
The drumms are too loud and the bass is not "there".The guitar tone is really good and needs the "rainforcement" from the Bass!!.maybe a smoother ,deeper bass sound will hit the spot since the bass drum is really "punchy" and have no room sound.!!wich i like on bass drum!!!Anothe trick to make it more individual is using some harmonies on the guitar track.in some parts ,a seccond guitar can change alot.
Just my 2 cents!!
I like to hear how it "evolves".Keep posting Bro!!

Re: Please listen and comment

How high could the fidelity of this hi-bandwidth streaming audio format be anyway? I think it's a bit hard to judge the sound quality of a recording that exhibits such lossy compression artifacts (specifically in the guitar's distortion & the cymbals).

As far as the song goes, I'd have to agree that you could spice up the drum part a bit & it could use vocals--screams for them actually!

& I agree that the bass is not "there" and the drums could be stepped back a bit.

Nice job overall!

Re: Please listen and comment

Thanks for the great responses, I'm taking all of them to heart and really really appreciate all the help! This is a great place and a wealth of knowledge and support. I'll post another version as I get there...hopefully after this weekend.

Thanks again everyone.
