Re: POD XT Anyone?????

Its sounds kind of close, but still has the solid state sound. To me, some of the modles sound weak. Sometimes that is fixed by tweaking it right. I've had it for a year and to me its sounds better than anything else except the vox tonelab. I havent actually played one, but people seem to like the tonelab better. As for the POD, it will modle a ton of vintage amps and get a good sound sounds great when recording and you have to find the right amp to put it through when playin at home. It's hard to use live cause I don't have the footswitch and the knobs are hard to tweak when trying to play. Some modles sound better than others, but if you want a real review, I suggest going out to a store and trying the tonelab and POD.

Hope this sorta helps,
Rob

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

One more thing, it also has factory presets for many famous songs. They sound ok, but get better when you add your own touch to them.
Songs like:
-purple haze
-eruption
-cliffs of dover
-you really got me
-day tripper
-highway to hell

There is also the plexi with variac (van halen), and the plexi jump lead (plexi with imputs 2&4 connected by a cord)

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

I've owned a Pod XT for the past year now, tried to convince myself that I liked it. I really did hate the damn thing. I finally sold it and bought a Vox Tonelab. It sounds A LOT better! I say spend the extra $50 or so because it's really worth it. The Pod XT is a good product, I like the way the interface works and how all of the effects are shown on screen and have a button designated for each one. The cleans are fantastic, and the Marshall JCM model is pretty damn cool. But any high gain or distorted channels sound like complete crap. Like bad crap. I've said it before, the Mesa rectifier model sounds like a hippo farting in a tar pit. It's ridiculous how bad it is. If you're hoping to get good high gain tones out of the XT, forget about it. If you can live with low to mid gain settings and cleans, go for it. Also, the XT has a lot of effects, but honestly I never use them, and there are way too many parameters. I like to turn knobs til it sounds good and see everything in front of me. It's like you have to mess with the settings and tweak the effects for a long time to get a usable sound of it.

I haven't had the Tonelab long enough to give a complete review of it, but I am freakin impressed. It's a blast to play through and it really sounds like a real amp, or at least very close. I don't give a rat's ass if they sound just like the amp they are modeling or not, as long as you get good tone out of it, which you can.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

Lymod, You can't rely on the factory sounds. You need to dial them up yourself to match what you want to hear. The effects are great on the XT. There are guys who buy the PODxt and use it for effects only for their old Class A type of amps.

I've got a bunch of soundbytes on my site for the XT. Address is below. Let your ears be the judge... Decide for yourself if it sounds good or bad. Also between my site and Line 6 there has got to be 1000's of others patches available to try out using USB/MIDI to your computer.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

I like mine.

Pros - lots you can do with it.

Cons - the amps sound exact, but consider that most of your favourite tones are from MODDED marshall amps, not standard ones... or are amps with specific stomp boxes in front. So recreating a favourite tone is easier said than done.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

How many patches can the pod xt hold on top of the factory presets already in it? I'm assuming it has lots of space.

dun...dun. DUN.............DA!!!!! A total of 4 places!! Not exactly a lot.

yes, there are the factory presets, then 4 empty spaces other than that. You have to overwrite the others if you want room.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

You can get up to 32 with the floorboard. You can store zillions on your computer with Line6 Edit.

yeah that's what I did, just stored them on the hard drive.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

hmmm, I thought you could store more than that. I guess they're easy enough to get from the line 6 site though.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

You can hold 32 patches on the current PODxt. It's Flextone amps that can only access 4 without the floorboard. The PODxt has access to all 32 with or without the floorboard.

There is a PODxt upgrade in that will be doubling the memory locations on the PODxt to 64. Hopefully that will be out by the end of summer.

The way most people do it is, they save over the factory patches. You use Line 6 Edit software to save your patches on to your PC and to organize easily how you will use them. You can also save off your complete bundle of settings, like the factory ones, or you can always do a hard reset when starting up to reset all factory pacthes from the internal chip.

Re: POD XT Anyone?????

If you want true vintage amp sound, get a vintage amp. If you want a versatile tool in a compact, easy to store and carry device, go for the POD. As with everything else I have played, the factory presets leave alot to be desired. But the POD is fully programmable and you can save over the presets. As Xeromus said, you can get a good sound out of modelers--even if it is not "true" to the original amp (which, frankly, I think they come pretty close).
