Pole piece not working

I've just fitted a Seymour vintage P90 into a telecaster.....on testing the unit, the D and G polepieces aren't working , any suggestions as to why ? Plus! If I can get it working is it likely it will be out of phase with tele bridge unit?

Re: Pole piece not working

Hmm. The only thing I can think of is the pole screws were changed for non magnetic screws

Re: Pole piece not working

right. the same magnets cover all the strings so its probably something with the screws

Re: Pole piece not working

Thanks for replies, but the pole screws haven't been changed...…..could the securing screws play any part ?

Re: Pole piece not working

If you tap a screwdriver on the poles while the amp is plugged in do you hear anything? Does the screwdriver stick?

Re: Pole piece not working

They are the wrong screws. Either stainless steel or something else non metallic.

Just replace the screws

Is the pickup new?

That makes sense -if I simply take out the screws first , that should confirm? The pick up is about 15 years old -I bought it new but it never got used till now.

Re: Pole piece not working

Very strange that it would've come that way brand new. I don't see any possibility other than that the screws are the wrong material (or maybe so short they don't reach the magnets).

I'd try swapping the screws that don't work with some of the others that do work just to be sure. But it sounds as if you're going to need two new ones either way.

Re: Pole piece not working

thats very odd. try switching a working screw into the dead spot and vise versa. if the issue follows the screw then you know you just need two new screws. if it stays with the same strings then there is something weird going on with the keeper or something else

They would be very short not to reach. And if they were magnetic they would still work a little.

From my time working at the other big pickup maker, you need screws so you go get them out of a box with hundreds of other screws. I never found a non magnetic screw, but I got either the wrong or a mal formed screw that slipped in from the supplier. So it’s not impossible.

Re: Pole piece not working

Something inhibiting contacts between the screws and the metal plate they screw into? Dirt? So basically it's part air-P90 .

Re: Pole piece not working

in theory youd still have something from those poles, magnetism can jump gaps

Re: Pole piece not working

Can you swap out the screws for the adjacent screws just to see if the sound comes back?

Definitely the best thing to test right here.
