Polepieces and spacer material

I have two questions. How will an EVH 78 model sound with 12 polepieces instead of 6 polepieces and 6 slugs?

Also, what difference to the sound will the spacer make? I'm putting a maple spacer on the side that would normally have slugs, and a metal spacer on the other side.

Re: Polepieces and spacer material

Oddly enough, using 12 pole pieces will tend to make the pup weaker. We were just discussing this in another thread somewhere, and its in one of the Seymour Q & A's. The screws, extending out of the bottom of the pup, will shift the magnetic field away from the strings, making the output weaker.
Its the reason that all the SD schematics show splitting a humbucker to the stud coil. Its a stronger magnetic field.

Ever since I read that, I've been meaning to cut off the bottom of the pole screws, (after tweaking the heighth), just to see if I could notice a difference.

Don't know about the spacer.

The EVH be more aggressive and have a fuller, more 3 dimensional weight to its sound with 12 adjustable poles that are radiused to match the bridge/neck curve. I fret the highest fret and set 1/16" between the top of each pole and bottom of each string.

Start with the D string and raise the pole as high as it will go until a gap appears between the bottom of the screw head and the bobbin, then lower it a touch. Now raise/lower the entire pup until you get the 1/16" gap. Adjust the poles themselves for the rest of the strings. Starting with the D will get as much of all the screw heads out from the bobbins as possible.

Play it with all the poles flat first though and then radius them. You won't believe the difference. I dont know about the spacers.

Give us a review when your done!
