Pondering lowering the output of my Ibanez PGM 301

Haven't been on here in a while, long time no see.

I've had an Ibanez PGM301 fitted with two Dimarzio Tone Zones(basswood, hard tail RG) in my stable a while, love the look and plays great, however it seems to have taken a back seat the last couple of years as I have two other humbucker guitars that have been pleasing me more. First is a 75 Ibanez Destroyer with Suhr SSV pickup which are his PAF style and a 1976 Ibanez 2630 (es335 syle guitar) with its stock flying fingers pickups.

Now I don't expect or really want my PGM to sound like these guitars, but compared to the others the PGM is just totally devoid of any kind of character. Just so blah. I realize this Is a common complaint with basswood Ibanez.

I'm considering getting something a bit lower output and not so overwound like the tone zone that might bring about a bit more nuances but I'm curious what you guys think. I don't really want to go way low output like a real PAF, but was maybe considering the Whole lotta humbucker set.

Thoughts?

'75 Destroyer, nice! Hmm, I have two old basswood Ibanez guitars and wouldn't consider them devoid of character :).

A pu with a lower resistance seems like the ticket, as it'll be less compressed and more open sounding. I haven't tried the WLH set but from what people here say about them, the seem quite nice. They seem to be a bit more beefed up from the PAF type vibe while keeping the character.

Mid-ouput bridge pups like the Brobucker (Custom Shop, so $$), Screamin' Demon, and 59/C hybrid are also worth thinking about.

In the neck, a PAF style pup keeps up with a higher output bridge just fine. Loads of options from SD - Seth Lover, Jazz, '59, A2P etc.

How about using one of Gilbert's own ideas by making it possible to run the coils of each humbucker in parallel?

^^ Hm, I thought he used his Super Ds like that, but it's certainly worth trying.

A Demon in basswood is a really nice combination and more versatile than you might think
