Popping Cracking and Humming Output Jack

On my old Washburn bt-8 there are horrible buzzing popping and cracking sounds whenever I cause the cable to move about inside the input jack socket The cable does appear a little loose in the input jack socket but not that much, it sounds fine when I am still, but it cracks and buzzes whenever I move. Does anyone know what this could be? (I have tried loads and it's not the cable)

It sounds like the jack is just starting to get worn...

You can try bending the jack-spring in to make certain it's going to make good contact & also perhaps clean it for the same reason but if I were you I'd just replace it.

They are cheap enough & any idiot can handle the two solder connections it requires to replace it...

That will do it and just make sure you don't reverse the wires.

If you accidentally reverse the wires, you will get horrible buzzing, so you'll know right away. BTW, this was the first guitar repair I learned to do (replacing the output jack).

Asian guitars (even high quality ones) use the absolute cheapest crap jacks. Every Asian guitar I buy gets a brand new Switchcraft jack for trouble free playing.

Re: Popping Cracking and Humming Output Jack

I once had a jack that was prone to humming.

I changed it out when it started to demand a full share of the gig money!

Backup singers....jeesh! :)
