Portable recorders

I'm wanting to get something like the zoom h4n or tascam Dr-44wl. Do any of you guys use something along these lines to record quick ideas?

Re: Portable recorders

Sorry for the brief response. I think it sounds great. I have the Q3HD, with the video recorder. Although I hardly use the video because 1. I don't need it, and 2. It eats up a lot of memory storage. Audio wise, it's certainly nothing to sneeze at. I've recorded a jam with my drummer, and I thought it really turned out well. I'm very happy with my unit.

Re: Portable recorders

I use my cellphone, which has a mic that will withstand louder stuff, and I use the camcorder function so I can also see what I was doing.

Between that and having Reaper on my laptop, I haven't even looked at portable recorders in a long time.

Re: Portable recorders

I just got a Zoom H4N and we love it!

simple and sounds very very authentic. I'm blown away.

Re: Portable recorders

I guess I'm pretty old school. I like to use a Boss BR-600 because I can record silently late at night using headphones without disturbing my family. The built-in guitar and bass sounds are pretty good (especially the Roland/Boss sounds) and the guitar -> bass simulator is decent. Along with the built-in drum machine I could do complete song demos if I only had a convenient way to do keys.

Re: Portable recorders

I often use a very basic Tascam DR-05 ($99) for recording jam sessions or getting ideas down quick. Lots of bang for the buck, easy to set up, sounds decent, etc...

Re: Portable recorders

I finally went with the H4N haven't really had a chance to mess with it yet though. Hopefully it'll get lots of use.
