So the other night I lent my Peavey Butcher head to a friend who wanted to use it for recording his band. And after me emphasizing that he should not even plug the thing into the wall without hooking up a cab first, he of course ran it for several hours with no load hooked up, only the booster output going to a DI box. :smack:
I got it back today and after hearing what had happened I immediately checked it out to see if anything was wrong. It seemed to be working normally at first, but after a little while of running it at close to wide open (normal operating conditions for me), it started to smell like burning electronics and sounded kind of weak, almost like a distortion pedal with a slightly dead battery. The difference in sound is hard to describe and could just be my paranoid ears listening more closely than normal, but the burning smell is something I've definitely never experienced before with this amp.
The only time I've had to take the amp into a tech before was because of a similar situation, where the amp was left on after being unplugged from the wall, so the next time it was plugged in, it was essentially on full volume with no load hooked up. It took about 5 minutes for me to realize this, at which point the power tubes were all shot and needed replacing.
So basically my question is: what should I do? At this point I don't really have anything to go on besides a weird smell and possibly altered sound. I'm assuming the OT is still okay because the amp is still jet-engine loud, but I don't want to, say, keep running it as is and find out I made a minor problem worse. Any input/ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.
