Possible new project guitar

I might be buying a dean avalanche off of a friend of mine as kind of a project guitar. What do you guys know about these guitars? What all would you recommend upgrading and what would be some good cheap pups to throw in?

Re: Possible new project guitar

Hot rodded set is always a good choice for a modest price. Always sounds good in any guitar and if you coil tap them, you have yourself some supreme sounding single coils.

well thats cheap for a full wired pickguard but i have no idea what they sound like. what do you want the guitar to sound like?

Re: Possible new project guitar

I play a lot of metal/rock. From what information I can find at the moment they are basically single coil invader clones.

Re: Possible new project guitar

I haven't messed with guitar enough to really know how to describe the sound I want. The best I could do is something that could do something close to Avenged Sevenfold's sound but also have the ability to sound good clean if need be.

Re: Possible new project guitar

3 single coils aren't very useful for metal and rock. If you're on a budget, I'd just get 1 good humbucker instead of a bunch of marginal single coils. Check to see if your guitar is routed for a humbucker in the bridge. If it is, score an HSS pickguard for $10 and a hot pickup like the Custom or Distortion. If your guitar is only routed for single coils, I'd just get a hot rails or another single coil size humbucker. That will get you rocking. If you want to score a neck pickup to upgrade your cleans you can always do that later.

A7X signatures are:
Mahogany body
Mahogany neck
Dual SD Invader pickups

Cheapest route to something similar-sounding:
Used SG knockoff, replace bridge pickup with a used Invader. Stock neck for cleans or track down a decent used PAF-style neck bucker for $30.

Budget: $100-150 (+30 if both pups swapped)

PS if you skimp on the guitar, do NOT skimp on pickups and get a set of cheapies --- instead buy at least one hiend used pickup, usually start with the bridge pup

This is not going to be my main guitar. My main guitar is a Schecter c6+. I am just using this one to try my hand at different techniques to possibly upgrade or play if I can eventually get it to sound really good. I should have made that clearer at the start. My budget is really tight, that's why I am going for this guitar as a project. He is only charging me $50.

Re: Possible new project guitar

Your budget appears to be $130ish... you CAN get a cheapie used SG and a used duncan invader for the money

Dont add $69 knockoff pickup sets to a $120-new guitar, you'll get better results if at least either the pickup OR the guitar is something a bit more reputable
