Possibly Switching Pickup Sets... Duncan Distortion with Full Shred vs John Petrucci

Hey all,

I am having a custom guitar built. Its a limba body, maple top and neck, rosewood fretboard. I originally wanted a Duncan Distortion in the bridge, Full Shred in the neck. Now, I am contemplating changing to the newest John Petrucci set: Crunch Lab in the bridge, LiquiFire in the neck. What would the differences be? I feel that the JP set would add better clarity, definition and versatility. Any and all input is GREATLY appreciated!

Depends on what you're looking for... what kinda music you're lookin to play

Re: Possibly Switching Pickup Sets... Duncan Distortion with Full Shred vs John Petru

I play mostly metal. I also play all kinds of leads so they'd have to really cut through the mix. I also need a great clean sound. I coil tap for all my cleans.

He definitely can wire it that way. But the difference in sound is what I'm curious about.

Depends on how the pickups sound in the wood that you're using. I've used the Liquifire, Crunch Lab, and Distortion, all in the bridge of guitars, and they're all solid sounding pickups. They were all Strat style guitars with balanced-brighter woods... What kind of thickness are you going for with the limba and maple top?

Re: Possibly Switching Pickup Sets... Duncan Distortion with Full Shred vs John Petru

It's an advanced bolt on that behaves like a midpoint between set neck and bolt on. The thickness of the body and top is that of a les Paul. Very beefy strat style body.

Re: Possibly Switching Pickup Sets... Duncan Distortion with Full Shred vs John Petru

The thickness of the top varies because it is a carved top.

You may want to go Duncan Custom in the bridge. I haven't tried the Crunch Lab in a thicker/warmer body like what you're going for.
