Pot of No Pot

Question for ya... The '59 LP PAF's were not potted, right? Or were they? So, does Billy Gibbons '59 have potted PAF's? If it doesn't why are the "Pearly Gates" potted?

Because amps are significantly louder now, and feedback is an issue with unpotted PU's, as it is with hollow bodies. That's why these days almost all PU's are potted, and the vast majority of guitars are solid bodies.

Are you saying the '59 PAF's were unpotted?

the PG's are NOT suppose to be copies of the pickups in Pearly... They were designed so that Billy could get the same sound as Pearly from his other guitars...

Re: Pot of No Pot

And modern pickups from mainstream makers are generally potted so as to be more flexible for whomever decides to buy them and whatever music they decide to play.

The first gibson pickups that were potted I believe were the 490 series from the late 80/early 90's

Re: Pot of No Pot

Potting pickups is something that I will do if it is going into either a Semi Hollow or a Telecaster. I just recently installed a set of Gibson 57 classics in my new Custom 335 (A Brian Monty Blues Queen). The 57 Classics came potted so in they went & I couldn't be happier. The guitar sounds great with these pickups. I have a few Telecasters and the bridge pickup in a Telecaster is usually surrounded by the bridge which is usually metal & this makes the bridge pickup prone to squealing. After potting these pickups most of the squeal goes away. It works well, but keep in mind a lot of this depends on how much volume & gain you play with. I play pretty clean but at highr volumes you have to be careful.
