Potentiometers Question

I just realized that one of my guitars with two pots have different marking on them. One of them has B stamped and the other one has A.

I was trying to read more about audio and linear taper pots, but couldn't tell which pot is what.

Right now the B pot is volume and the A is wired for tone. Is this normal? Also, what happens if I switch them around?

Re: Potentiometers Question

It depends on how they're stampde, but generally, "A" means audio taper, and "B" means linear taper. The "A" designation is more standard.

I'm at the point where I prefer audio tapers for volume, but I like them for tone also.

Re: Potentiometers Question

Artie, thanks for the info.

I guess I'll have to switch them around since I currently have the B for volume. No wonder all I can hear is volume off or on. I'm not getting any changes in between.

I always thought Audio Taper was standard in the volume position.

Re: Potentiometers Question

It usually is. Thats odd that yours came that way. Is it possible that someone else "modded" it? What kind of guitar?

Re: Potentiometers Question

It came stock with a Peavey Predator Plus EXP. At first I didn't notice and all I did was disconect the tone knob since I don't use it. I started noticing that I couldn't clean up my pups with the volume knob at all or a very limited amount only before it would cut off completely.
