Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

I hopefully have a pretty simple question here.

I have a 1954 inspired Les Paul Custom project that I am building right now. I will have a P-90 Staple pickup in the neck and an Antiquity soapbar P-90 in the bridge. I am getting parts ordered, and I am not sure what value pots to use, 250K or 500K?

1. What value pots do you forum members recommend?
2. While we are at it, what cap values do you recommend?

This is be standard Les Paul wiring, 1 3 way switch, 2 volume, 2 tone.

Thank you.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

I'd probably just do standard '50's Les Paul wiring to start. I'd definitely want 500K pots with those pickups.

BTW, that is my favorite Les Paul type of all time. I'm glad to finally find someone else who digs 'em.

I like them too......mainly as they are unusual. The staple is a nice tone too.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

I did the same thing, turned a regular LP into a '54 LPC. Staples are very bright and clear, really nice in the neck slot.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

the staple in the neck and p90 in the bridge is a wonderful combo. 500k pots all around .02 caps is what I would use

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

High quality, audio taper 500k. If any of the pot resistance tolerances are on the low side (450k-ish), use those with the Staple.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Thank you for all the replies. I have worked on many guitars, but for some reason I have never really worked on many P-90s. I think a few of the Korean PRS guitars is all I have done.

The guitar that is currently in the works has black walnut instead of mahogany, and a very nice flame maple for the standard maple top. With a top that like, I will be staining the guitar trans black, instead of painting over it. But I will still use gold hardware on it.

So thanks again. If anyone has any helpful building tips that they think I have forgot, feel free to leave a friendly message. Take care.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Seymour himself recommends 500k pots for P-90s. i prefer linear pots rather than taper. just better control. i have a p-90 with a 500k pot and it's nice.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Tips.....get all your holes drilled and your setup done before you get paint onto the thing. And slightly oversize all hardware holes so you only need minor to no resizing one you've got the finish done.

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Seymour himself recommends 500k pots for P-90s.

Although individual tastes vary. Some of us prefer 250K's on our bridge P-90's, as they can be very bright and thin with A5's. Some guys EQ their amps to the bridge P-90, and then have an overly dark neck.

the staple is a pretty bright pup, not in a bad way, but bright. the antiquity p90 has a2 magnets.

3440CE1B-C0D4-40A8-ACF8-A9983F2E7CA7.jpg I’m happy I found this thread! I’m putting a Seymour Duncan Staple in the neck of my Fano Alt DeFacto ML6 and I wasn’t sure if I should be going for a 250k or 500k pot!(it has 500k pots in it already, though it’s set up as two volume and one tone, a bit different than I’m used to) I had some spare 250k pots and though I was going to use one of them when the Staplr was put in, so I’m glad I researched a little bit, as it would have sucked to get the guitar back and realize that the 250k pot sucked too much life out of the pickup! It has Fralin p90’s in there right now, they definitely aren’t bad, but I feel that there’s almost too much midrange, almost sounding nasally...I’m debating whether to go with a Klein Epic 57 for a different bridge pickup or saving up some money and buying a vintage 50’s/early 60’s p90 for the bridge...I have a 1958 Les Paul Special, and the tone out of that one is just nuts...But I’ve been afraid to play it as it’s in such great shape(it looks like it has almost identical wear as the Fano with its light distressing...I rarely play it as I’m afraid of scratching it, but I love the p90 tone so much that I had to get something newer that I could actually play without reservations!) so how has the choice of 500k pots been? Is everyone happy with that choice? I’m probably just going to leave the wiring harness alone, as it seems to have a pretty decent cap and good pots...I’m really excited as I always wanted a vintage LP Custom with a Staple pickup, at least I’ll have something close now! And the Fano only weighs 6.3 pounds, so it’s an amazingly comfortable guitar to play, and amazingly resonant! Thanks for the info contained in this thread, it’s made deciding what to do so much easier!

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

I have to say that is a cool looking guitar...

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Dang, how did you get the Staple to fit in that thin a guitar?

Re: Pots for Staple P-90 and Antiquity P-90?

Hybrid: I always use 500K's in the neck slot, unless it's warm LP, and then 1 meg. The more treble is reduced, the more prominent the mids seem. Not what I'd want in a neck PU, that's a warm and bassy/middy location to begin with. From what said about your Fralins, you already know the answer to your question.
