Can I use any pot for the volume and tone or is there a certain pot for each?

As long as you have the right value (250K, 500K, etc.) that you're looking for, the same pot can be used as volume or tone. What causes it to function as a one or the other is how it's wired in the circuit with capacitors, etc.

Yes, I fogot that point, use audio taper pots for guitar.

They don't really change the sound per se. They just affect the "rate" at which the volume or tone changes relative to how much you move the control.

I like linears in some guitars, audio's in others. (I used to prefer linears all the way around, but I'm starting to warm-up to audio's.)
