Power Attenuator

I plan to be buying a new amp soon, and I've all but decided to get a Peavey 6505+ 1x12 Combo. I play mainly thrash metal, but I need to be able to get the amp to perform well at low volumes. Therefore, I'm looking into buying an attenuator with it. Any recommendations about specific attenuators that would suit my amp and style?
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question; I know absolutely nothing about attenuators.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Power Attenuator

I'll copy/paste the answer I put on the BKP forum for you too :D

When I was in the market for an attenuator I went for the 100w Weber Mass as it has enough power handling, but it is also impedence/ohmage switchable which means I can use it with any of my amps or cabs.

Re: Power Attenuator

they perform well at low volumes - they have like a jillion preamp tubes for the distortion/gain. not sure why you'd need an attenuator.

Re: Power Attenuator

If you do finally decide to get an attenuator, I agree that the Weber Mass works great, esp for the price.

Re: Power Attenuator

I want to make one thing clear: I just want to be able to turn the amp up to about 4 or 5 so that the tubes can get the best sound out. I'm not looking to turn it up above that.

Re: Power Attenuator

It will still be hellaciously loud. People have this misconception that they can crank an amp and then dial it way back on the attenuator and it will sound good. It won't. The more you attenuate, the more high end it cuts out-and the eq can't fix it. I have a Weber Mass 100 that has a switch to boost the treble, however, it's not exactly the same frequencies that are cut out. It works, but effectively, only to bring the volume from earth-shattering down to nearly deafening. YMMV, but don't expect miracles.

Also: EL34s are known for breakup at volume. 6L6s, like in the 6505, aren't. They're known for their headroom, so even at 4-5 on the master, 95% of what you're hearing is probably the preamp, anyway. Honestly, I'd consider an attenuator for that to be a waste of money.

Re: Power Attenuator

I guess I won't be getting an attenuator, then. Also, since it seems like, from what I'm hearing, the 6505 will perform well at low volumes, I won't need one either. Thanks.

Re: Power Attenuator

yup, it's just a good amp, period. It has an awesome reputation as a workhorse. And it sounds awesome in a band.
