Power Conditioners

Okay, my amp is just a few feet away from my computer, and I get a LOT of feedback and noise because of that. If I get a power conditioner and then plug my amp into that, will it stop all that? Should I plug my computer through it also?

Re: Power Conditioners

Someone else may know more about this than me... but my first reaction would be "no". Your amp is picking up RF from your computer screen. I don't think a power conditioner would help here.

Re: Power Conditioners

i have my amp near my computer too.
its hooked up to a seperate outlet.most of your noise is probably coming from the monitor (if its a crt monitor) turn it off and see if you hear a diffrence.
also dont play with the guitar body right next to the amp that will add lots of noise too.

Re: Power Conditioners

The monitor makes it louder, but even when it's off I get a lot of noise. And I'm using a different outlet.

Re: Power Conditioners

have you played this guitar in other places? (rehearsal,shop....)
ever had the amp in a diffrent location? was it better there?
florecent lights can also cause hum.

you can try shielding the guitar, you might have some ground loops in the wiring.
guitarnuts.com has a great guide on shielding.

Yes I have, and it's only around my computer.

Re: Power Conditioners

A power conditioner will most likely have no effect on the noise you're getting. You're probably picking up tons of noise from your computer (the computer itself is noisy too, not just the monitor). Is the amp a lot quieter without your guitar plugged in? If you shut down the computer does it make a big difference in the noise coming out of your amp?

whats stopping you, if you don't mind me asking? is it just in a small room?
My gf and I live in a one bedroom apartment, and she didn't want my computer/music stuff in the bedroom. So instead, we use the dining room as my little music area.

CRT or LCD monitor?
CRT, but not for long. It's totally crapping out, the brightness is turned all the way up and a lot of pictures look almost completely black.

Re: Power Conditioners

That's probably what you're hearing. CRT's are horrible with pickups.

Re: Power Conditioners

Cheap grounding? bad grounding? a good cheap power conditioner is one by monster cable. it was like 70$, and works really well. i have our entertainment center completly plugged in to it. when we turn on the vacuum, the picture on the tv doesn't even "hop", or flicker. it kicks ass, and might help. if it doesn't, return it. good luck.

scroll down towards the bottom. any of those would work, minus the last two.

Re: Power Conditioners

Save your money. The noise probably isn't a power issue. Don't bother with power conditioning until you get a new monitor. Your CRT is probably the source of your noise.
