Power cut on a Tweaker

How expensive/hard would it be to add a half power switch to an egnater tweaker 15w combo?

I might want to have a professional do it, but if it's easy I might be able to do it myself.

I want something under 10w for bedroom levels, but I do like 15w power for larger gigs and the tweakers switches.

Most would accomplish THAT by tying the the screens to the plates.
It is not something for a "first timer" to do at all.
The cost would be close to or exceed the monetary value of the amp.
I would look for a SS amp or a Single tube (power tube), tube amp.
good luck

Re: Power cut on a Tweaker

The tweaker isnt a particularly loud amp at 15 watts. If it's too loud for you to get usable tones out of now, cutting it to 10 watts, even 7 watts probably wouldn't help much. If you're in a shared household or apartment setting, even 1 watt of cranked valve could bother people.

I just use modelling software to practice then use my tube amps when I actually want to hear loud tubes.

The "tubes just for the sake of tubes" path is a frustrating one which I do not recommend.

I do that with my Tweaker... sort of.
In the lower levels of volume it soaks up most highs and sounds crappy. I fixed that by dropping a Boss GE7 in the loop with the volume at minimum.

Noticeable improvement at living room volumes. :)

So you basically running the preamp side hot and lowering the input into the power section?

Yes, a bit. The thing is to get the master volume up to a certain point where highs come through a lot better, and this helps getting that knob a lot higher without police complaints. Otherwise the tone sucks at low volumes.

Re: Power cut on a Tweaker

Halving the wattage wont halve the volume. Don't mod your amp. Just turn it down and live with the sound, or maybe get a little amp like a micro cube.

What?
Your guitar doesn't have a volume knob?

I set the gain to 12:00 and then the volume to 9:00 for practice at home. Then use the guitar;s volume knob to do the rest.

Re: Power cut on a Tweaker

IF you don't mind losing some high end.

Half power switches rarely impress me. The volume drop isn't that much. On an EL84 power tube, you'll often see a Pentode (full) and Triode power switch. But you lose half the harmonics. I've not found a use for it yet. I'd rather use a gain pedal to get me practice volume.

.....has been my experience on all counts previous. ^^^^^^^
The "Good Ole" guitar volume knob trick. :)
Regards the "Half Power" switch.....again, my experience as well. When you switch to triode mode, the amp takes on a whole, new life...and it does not sound as near as good.
Trying to recall all the options, but I think about the only half power switch I like, is with an amp that has Four Power Tubes and the switch cuts out two. Of course, then you have Impedance concerns.
Others have said (including myself) it is usually better to invest in a low power amp.
good luck

Re: Power cut on a Tweaker

You can replace the PI tube with a RetroValve blue. It will reduce the output from the preamp section to the power tubes maybe 10% or so. You could get a less efficient speaker cabinet (going from 100dB sensitivity to 94 dB sensitivity will cut volume in half).
