Power supply question for the electonics experts

I have a Sennheiser wireless system, and the AC cable to the receiver is starting to check out. I would rather pay much less for a non-Sennheiser adapter if possible, but I want to make sure I get one that fits the specs and won't cause any harm to the unit - if it comes down to it, I'd rather pay full price for the brand name and not take a risk. The back of the receiver says "DC in - 12V/300mA" but the failing cable says "12V/400mA" Can anybody tell me for sure what exactly I should look for? Thank you!

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

I would look for 12V/400ma (or more within reason). Your receiver only needs 300ma, but I'd be careful about going too low as that could damage the receiver or cause the wall wart to overheat. As long as the plug is a standard size, that shouldn't be difficult to find or too expensive.

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

Yep, both answers above are good ones. The voltage and polarity need to match. The current (ma) of the supply can be higher than the stock unit, but don't go lower. The receiver will only draw the current it needs. This is 101 stuff so I can answer even though I'm not an electronics "expert" ... besides, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Pretty much it right there ^^^^^^^
If you are going to be driving 100 MPH you do not want your tires rated for "just" 100 MPH. You would want a good margin of error.
I could be wrong, but I doubt Sennheiser builds Wall Warts. "Any" that is rated properly should be fine.
Parts Express
Amazon
Etc Etc

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

If you know the specs, polarity, size of the plug, etc... you can probably find one pretty cheap at Digikey or Mouser.

Yeah...good point. Make sure you get the right polarity of the Barrel Vs Pin at the input to your amp.

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

Make sure it's regulated, if the original was regulated.

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

Most new ones are digital switchers, so the regulation is in the chip, not like the old analog diode bridge adapters, hard to find those rated at more than ~200mA.

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

You mean nobody's throwing a crappy little transformer with some diodes and a capacitor in there anymore?

Next thing you'll tell me teenagers aren't buying CD's.

LOL, nice! Haven't you heard, music is dead, we are the dinosaurs...

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

The one amp versions of those wall warts are all over Amazon

Don't spend more than five bucks
Get two if you can

Re: Power supply question for the electonics experts

Isn't the polarity obvious physically? Male vs. female.

Like LP says...you do not know unless you look. Like the old 2 wire plugs where the Hot and Neutral were the same size. You would not know if the Pin was Negative or Positive unless you check your device.
