today my new tele pups arrived here and of course i had to install them right away(the fact that you can take of a tele bridge makes installing pups quite easy).
What i put in there are:
-Jerry Donahue Model for the bridge
-Quarter Pound rhythm, coiltapped version, for the neck
I just wanted to praise Seymour and write up my impressions so far. I love those pups, they have exactly the sound i wanted and they just plain out rule.
Also both of them are very quiet in comparison to a lot of other single coils i've played so far. Just great!!!
JD brigde: Very twangy, but not piercing or shrill. A little smoothed out in the top end and a little warmer and hotter than the common tele pups i played so far. Great clean sounds with lots of sparkle and twang. The Overdriven sounds are great for blues and some classic rock and have lots of character and mojo. It can even do metal, but becomes a little harsh under high gain. Actually an impressive range of useable harmonics for a SC. This pup screams to be played with fingerpicking, the dynamics and the basic sound just seem designed for finger use and not a pick. I can't describe why it feels like this to me, but useing the fingers just sounds so great with this pup. Judging by the clips on youtube, this pup actually seems to be a big part of Jerry's tone, since i can come very close to his tone even with a different tele and amp. I love this pup and it's definitely a keeper.
QP neck: In one word: beefy! This pup actually has a lot of humbucker feel to it because of the beefy sound and quite high output(somewhere in the p.a.f range i'd say). The cleans are also great, but different from the JD. They are more like smooth but very clear Jazz cleans. This pups is very fat and bluesy when used with overdrive and turning the gain up a little more it becomes a straight out rocker, that has no problems doing AC/DC or pretty much any other form of Hardrock. it also sound cool playing Motörhead
Couldn't try the tapped mode since i don't have the push/pull i need(it just wouldn't work the way i want with a five way) right now, but i'll give you my experiences once i have it wired.
I also love this pup, and it's gonna be here along with JD for quite some time.
Both pups balance out quite nicely volume-wise. The only thing that doesn't satisfy me right now is the middle position. Because of the pretty different charcaters of the pups the mid position gets a little too beefy since the QP has so much beef to bring into it. This problem should be solved when the coiltap is up and running.
So i just had to rave a little and some people might even think my impressions might be helpful.
