Sorry, if it wasn't because I haven't been active in the guitar world for about 5 years or more I wouldn't be asking this question.

So, for the last couple of months I've been having this thought about starting to play again. I gave my little brother my trusty Strat and sold off all of my gear a couple of years back, so I have zero gear. Of course I want to get a Strat. I played Strats for about ten years before stopping and they just feel right. So, I went over to some of the local shops and found a couple of contenders: the first, a used AVRI '62. Nice, medium-thin neck and good pickups. Just a plain, classic Strat. But then I went to another shop and they had this mind blowing CS '69 Relic. I played that against all the newer AVRIs (the '65 sounded amazing, but I just couldn't get along with the huge neck) and it was a no contest for me. They want about $1700 for it. How fair is that price currently?

I'm still considering the used AVRI, for that price I could even get a Les Paul Jr. on top of the AVRI versus the CS (not that I'm getting a second for now). And yeah, I already have some money budgeted towards an amp, so no need to worry there. Cheers!

My number one Stratocaster is an AVRI '62, fitted with two Antiquity II Surfers and a Twangbanger plus my particular way of organising the controls.

The stock Fender 57/62 pickups are authentically thin-sounding. With your budget, the world would be your oyster for pickup upgrades. Fender CS '69 is an obvious candidate. Fishman Fluence is another.

If the guitar is that good of an instrument to you, I don't think that's an out of hand price for your main axe.

Re: Price check on Custom Shop Strat

Yeah, I don't think that's unfair price for a custom shop fender. eBay and reverb prices seem to be a bit higher for other relic models. See if you can talk them down a bit since cash all talks.

Based on prices of some of the Fender CS stuff, I think $1700 is a pretty great deal if you really like the guitar. A lot of standard production Fender guitars are pretty good to great these days, but there has just always, to me, been something really special about every Fender CS guitar I have ever played - as in the feel, the lightness and resonance, etc.

Modern CS prices are crazy. If you love the guitar, this is a great deal.

Yes! It's great to be back. I'm keeping the sig for now. I guess it's a good way to recognize me. So, I didn't end up going for the '69 Relic, but I did end up getting something pretty tasty. Still being setup, but as soon as it's ready to be shown I'll post a NGD thread for sure. Never been much of a fan of those "Incoming" style threads unless they have a serious amount of pictures.

You'll always get your money back. Unless guitar music becomes that unpopular. And who wants to live in that world :p
