Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

Boogeyman of Tone
i have decided to keep my RG after about a month of wanting to get rid of it, only if its cost effective. If its not i'll get a different knife edge, put the trem on my RS, and put the Custom and other hb in the RS also... dunno what i'd do with the rest of hte guitar though lol

what it needs done is this - the frets are worn from about the 7th down to the 1st, with the exception of a groove on the Gstring on the 9th

does it need a complete refret? if so how much (in pounds)

i dont want it backrouted anymore, so i need some wood put underneath the trem.

i need a new knife edge for the trem as one has worn down.

the selector switch is crackly and the knobs are cheap and i want to replace them, as the tone one does fall out.

the screws where the spring tension is ajusted - one of them has a very worn thread, i want to replace it while i can still move it lol

how much am i looking at guys?

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

Sounds like you'll need a partial refret. Pick a fret size that is close to the stock frets, and then the luthier will just replace the worn frets and level them to match the stock ones. A complete refret in America typically costs about $200, so I'd imagine you'll end up paying about $100. Even though he's not replacing all the frets, there's probably going to be more leveling work involved because the new frets will be at a different height than the old ones. I'd say you're looking at $100 or less for the rest of the work, depending on how much wood needs filled. Replacing the parts you mentioned isn't that expensive, it's mostly the labor of filling the wood. I'm a little confused as to what you mean when you say you don't want the trem back-routed anymore, but I'm estimating $200 USD or less for all the work. I don't know what that converts to in pounds, but you may be better off just selling the guitar. Unless it's something I really liked that played well and wasn't easily replaceable, I'd never sink $200 into a cheap guitar. I could be way off, as tech prices vary from one place to another. $200 may be a little high, but I wouldn't expect to pay any more than that if I were you.

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

Actually, I think that, for the work you want done, $200 USD is a very good price. Around where I live, it would be closer to $300 with a 4 week wait. That's why I started to work on my own stuff. :smack:

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

I think you'll need to have a complete refret as only doing some would mean that you would have diferences in height and the problem in levelling, you may also find that people would not want to do partial re-frets. Cost probably in the region of £100 plus wire, putting a block of wood I just don't know but you'll have to have someone with experience doing this and that may set you back anothe £50 -£75.

The parts are cheap and you could get them and do it yourself or get that guy who is going to do it for you as an all in price. So my guess is probably in the region of £200. Do you really want to do this?

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

wtf?

man i never pictured that much....

tbh i might as well put the good parts from the RG into the RS... i'd need to do at least the fret and pot/selector switch stuff to sell the thing anyway - probably at a loss..

Why do it up and then sell it at a loss?? Keep it for yourself and play it and enjoy it and only replace those few items that you really need and either get someone locally or do it yourself. Is there anywhere near you that you could get a quote for some of this just in case I might be giving you incorrect info? The sort of prices I have quoted are from a guy I use for some of my repairs but he's not cheap but knows his stuff.

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

well, the thing is in bits, literally :D

i was an idiot. basically i love the neck on the RS, but the RG's body, despite it having a backrouted floyd, seemed more resonant

i thought i could swap necks, (and after that didnt work, trems)... - bad idea - didnt measure first.

the RS hasnt got a backrouted trem so that was easy as pie to put back together, but the RG has, and i havent been able to face redoing the intonation - spring tension etc...

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

A new neck would only run you like 100-150 on ebay, and if it's an older RG with the strat style joint, you could even get a neck from warmoth.

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

its a 91 to my knowledge..

it has a back plate and not the recessed screws.

does that mean i could get a neck from warmoth?

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

actually that would be the best idea! since i dont like the super thin profile, providing it works.

i'd just want a 24 fret neck, probably maple neck rosewood board, would consider maple board.. but i dont see any :(

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

Yeah, you'd have to ditch the neck pickup if you went 24 fret from warmoth. Or find an old BC Rich or Jackson or Charvel neck with 24 frets that doesnt have that hangover, and has the same 4 bolt attachment.

Re: Price quote wanted (guitar repair)

mine does have a hangover..

tbh i hate floyds, and i hate skinny necks.. i hate the sound of a neck pup when the guitar has 24 frets!

im rhyming oh dear oh god..

i may as well sell it to a poor unsuspecting sod

:D

lol... too much excercise today, i feel light headed!
