Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

This auction has been up before..a LONG time ago...like a year or more.

I'll say this much..I don't believe the guys claims of maiden having 500 amps built for them (and besides the fact that during their prime they used 1987 NMVs), but Pete Cornish *is* the guy who did all of Dave's/Adrians custom pedalboards back in the day. It's feasible he would have been tweaking their amps.

EDIT: Hard to tell from the small pic and this early with no coffee..but I suspect that could be a JMP 1987

Other the Maiden provenance (which may or may not be true. You know the 500 amp deal didn't happen), what makes this amp sound better or worse than a stock $1,000 JMP from the late 70's???

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

well, for one..

more pics. a LOT more pics.

it can be one of em, but may not be. OTOH, i dont buy the 500 made specificaly for them bit. pete however did mod theirs back in the day and it is possible that it's one of those they giged with, but not one of a batch of 500. so it might be even rarer LOL

because it's been moded by pete cornish. he knows his stuff.

and please, if you find a stock jmp from the 70's for a grand, sell it to me. they are fetching insane prices these days.

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

Personally I think the built in 4w attentuation is pretty cool.

I'll say this much..I'd like to have it if it's indeed on of Dave or Adrian's cornish modded amps...for me, those are the best recorded/live sounding 1987s I've ever heard. They strike a perfect balance of smooth and crunchy in one marshall. Most other metalfaces are crunchier and have more bite. Dave and Adrians sound like a cross between a early 70s plexi and a 800 series 2004.

EDIT: they are very "thick" sounding as well. Take a listen to the Beast on the Road concert at hammersmith circa 1982 (use headphones)....If I could ever get those tones, I'd be one happy SOB.

The cosmetics of the box indicate it's a pre-1976 or 77. Was Maiden a big touring band in the early to mid 70's? I don't recall Maiden as being a well known touring band untill the early 80's, at least in the states. Marshall used to make unloaded 4x12 cabs for some big touring bands in the 70's, like Kiss, so the band could have a huge wall of Stacks as a stage prop. But 500 real amps ??? No way.

The first album was released in 79/80. In the early to mid 70s they were not touring anywhere except maybe on a doubledecker seeing the sights of london with their mommy's and daddy's :laugh2:

well.. they got big in the first half of the 80's. they had jpm stacks beforehand (mostly early 70's JMP's for all i remember) but definately not specificaly made for them amps.
to me that amp looks like the 74 jmp 50watter they had for sale a couple of months back over here. but the front panel is moded a bit.

like i said. modded, could be. one of their giging amps, prior to the 800 series, plausible, but a 500 batch. never. this could've happened in 84, or 87.. but definately not early in their career. ad i dont recall any 800's with 4 inputs. of course that could have been added, but without a spec sheet of the modification, you'll never know

it was released in april '80 .. or was it march.. dunno.

they did tour a LOT in the 70's .. self promoted touring, in a bus, called The Green Godess. no big production touring, like killers.

when the **** are you going to get "The early days", so you'll have your facts straight ;)

I do have it :bigthumb: but haven't watched the second part.

I was talking early to mid 70s Davey (pay attention to what I type! ;) )I used to have all kinds of bootlegs of them pre- first album from 78-79 so I'm aware of that... and used to have all the old B side 45s back when you were still a just a twinkle in your dad's eye.

I'm just old now and forget stuff :D

Now go buy my Dean and shuddap...:laugh2:

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

This has turned in to a hilarious thread (thanks to Davey and JeffB). :laugh2: :laugh2:

I can see a batch of that quantity in the mid-80's or something but not when they just hit. No way.

Don't forget that there's also the 1987x that came out in the 80's as part of the original reissue series.

Gotta see a serial number to confirm that it is truly an original 70's model.

Marshall made standard 4 input 50 and 100 watt JCM800's. These were 1987 and 1959 chassis in JCM800 boxes. These had the JCM800 cosmetics with Jim's signature on the front panal. They were probably not made in large numbers though. EC used (and still does at times) the JCM800 four input 1987 50 watt quite a bit during the 80's.

I suspect it is original..at least the box. None of the reissues were small-boxes to my knowledge.

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

I just can't believe the guy thinks he's going to sell a modded Marshall for £4000 - even if it DID belong to Maiden and even if it DID get modded by Pete Cornish!

I wouldn't pay £4000 for a Marshall used by Thin Lizzy in the 70s. And that's saying something!

I paid £425 for my '77 JMP 2204, INCLUDING a 4x12. This year! :fest7:

:chairfall

I agree though Simon...this guy is totally whacko charging what he's asking.

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

The first "plexi" reissue 1987 was the 1987S in 1988. The S had rounded corners around the panal opening, but it had the 70's large box size. The X came in very late 89 with more correct small box cosmectics. The box in the ad looks like an early 70's large box, but it's hard to tell sizes from the photo
