Pro Reverb speaker replace

My brother is going to replace the speakers in his 68 Silverface Pro Reverb. This was one of the early CBS ones w/ Blackface components installed @ factory. He wants "better than vintage" tone. In other words he wants to stay as close to stock as possible while making an upgrade and not just a replacement. He told me to tell y'all that he wants it to take pedals well since that's all he uses for gain. He never really plays it above "5" or so.

It really is a good sounding amp. But we have reached the end of my knowledge and have turned to the best ****ing forum on the net.:yourock:

Any ideas?:reporter:

Re: Pro Reverb speaker replace

Have him put a pair of Eminence TEXAS HEATS in there and thank me later. :)

Re: Pro Reverb speaker replace

These are the speaker models that were used in the SF Pro Reverbs. Oxford 12L6, Oxford 12T6, Utah 12", Rola 12" ceramic depending on the year of manufacture. A 68 probably has the Oxford 12L6, or the 12T6. The Utah and Rola I believe were used in the later models. I could be wrong. I have not used a Texas heat, but going by who is recommending them it would be worth a try. The only comment I will make is be careful not to "suck" the Fender out of it. Some speakers in Fender amps just don't work well IMHO. You might want to take a look at some of the Jensen RI. Like the 12N or 12Q they should be pretty close to what is in the amp now.

Re: Pro Reverb speaker replace

I think the best sounding stock speaker Fender used in the Pro Reverb was the original Jensen C12NA...that's what my blackface PR came with.

However, I prefer Celestions and that's what I put in mine when the Jensens finally wore out.

The Emm Texas Heats Scott mentioned would be a good choice too.

The weber cali's are ones that I really want to try sometime. Maybe a big old honkin' 15" california for my Tweed pro? Yep, that's the ticket.

I dunno what it is about Ted's 12's but I've never been crazy about them. I like his 10's alot, but his 12's have never done it for me. Either they have cone cry or he puts alot of dope around the surround to kill the cone cry and then they sound to tight. But I've never tried the Cali. It's kind of a JBL wannabe....right? Only you can get it with an aluminum dust cover or not...right? I'm such a Celestion guy that those are what I'm most familiar with and what I use myself.
