pro road cases...

ok i read some of the other thread on rack systems that hold heads as well and it brought up the idea i've had for a while to put my 3 favourite heads into one "case" on wheels... i'd like to be able to hold my 5150, JCM 800 and JCM 2000 in a road style case on wheels... something i could close up and keep the dust off is a major bonus of this... i've been using drop cloths... but i'd like to be able to wheel them into places when i need that type of amp...

i didn't get much info off the other thread but who is the best at making these style of cases? and who is the best for less?

my current game plan is to make one myself out of plywood and use some nice large casters on it...

Thats the plan I'm thinking as well along with slide out compartments for extra tubes, fuses, picks and cables.

Then I'm picking up an old BBE 422A and sticking it in just for Binner :D

Like I said in the other thread there's a lot of custom case companies out there. Shipping is outrageous due to size and weight... best to find a local company rather then get one from the opposite side of the country.

One way to find 'em is to call the local sound production company... who's doing the biggest festivals in the area? Call them and ask where they got their cases. Often they'll be able to broker a purchase if the company won't sell direct.

Another option is you know, google... "ATA case company ______"

Flight cases are the one place where its best to not skimp on quality. You'll be thankful when you see one take a big drop and none of the contents are damaged. Good ones have a lifespan that's longer then you or I...

Keep an eye out for used cases too. I've gotten great deals on some of mine and maybe they needed to be refoamed, but when you can get a screaming deal on something and pay maybe 20% of the original price... just beware of cases that are obviously thrashed and damaged.

Are you going anywhere you need all 3 amps at the same time? I'd much rather just get one head case that could potentially fit all 3 heads, one at a time, for taking one head to gigs and what not.

well my main large rig is 2 heads using a custom made head switching system into a single 1x12 cab... odd i know but it really works well... no pedals... just 4 or 5 channels of fun... sometimes it's my 5150 and my TSL100... or sometimes i use my 5150 and Classic 50 head... or sometimes i use my JCM 800 in there as well... so 2 head spaces for sure and maybe a 3rd for a spare..

i don't use this rig very often anymore since i'm bandless right now... it's just sitting right now collecting dust... but i like toys and i'd like to put them in a road case, wire up the switching system and just be able to plug in and play and wheel it into jam sessions... and close the stuff up to keep the dust off it...

part of the reason i was thinking of making it myself out of plywood from Home Depot is i don't have the real need to make it "Road Ready"... but just a stand on wheels that is safe enough for me... a small bookshelf kind of thing on wheels that will not tip over

I would advise against this. Heads are so much easier to haul around. You just create a monster that makes you want to have roadies. And you spend the money you could spend on groupies.

saddly it's the best sounding rig i've ever owned but the rig as is without a case is a monster... so having a cart/case kind of thing that can wheel into place is a massive bonus for when i do use it... and around the house i'd like to be able to roll it in one piece from room to room...

because of this rig's pain in the butt to haul issues i started using small 1x12 combos like the C30 and a 65 Deluxe with a pedalboard as my main easier traveling amps... in fact i'm hoping to buy a new 65 Deluxe Reissue this year and keep my real 65 at home safe...

i have many rigs... the big one is a pain and always will be... but it sounds killer...

for home i've been planning a huge bookcase kind of thing made out of solid 3/4 ply to hold all my amps anyways... this i plan to do this summer...

Years ago, I built a 2 head 4 rack space unit that had no front or back. It basically looked like a black bookshelf with some rack rails in the top section. It was cool for home, but as soon as I tried to lift it, I knew it was never going anywhere.

That's what I'd suggest. Just build one out of plywood, foam, casters, handles. Or, buy one of those metal office racks like you see some studios using to stack heads.
Even a cheap book case would work, if you cut out most of the back panel for access.

ya at my work we have quite a few Audio/Video carts that are wired up with computers, speakers and projector monitor's... made out of metal and have good locking casters... something like that would be killer if they came a little wider... only issue i could see with metal carts like this is vibrations and buzzes...

ya it looks like Plywood is the way for me to go... i may end up just making it big enough to hold 2 heads so i can get it to fit in my car still.... but i have a van too...

whenever i used this 5150/Classic 50 rig i never had so many people rave about the guitar sounds i had going... bassicly i used the 4 channels those 2 amps had plus the Godin guitar i own has a piezo trem bridge... so i had 5 great basic tones to choose from... only 2 effect pedals i had was a Chorus or a Flanger, and a wah... pretty early on i ended up getting rid of the 4x12 as people complained it was too loud.... and i stuck to a 1x12 on a cool little tilt back stand with a built in mic stand on it, used a Shure mic.... tilting it back i could hear myself like a monitor wedge and i was not too loud coming off the front of the stage... when i switched to the 1x12 that was when a lot of people said it sounded amazing

with the Axess Electronics Head switching system i was not sopposed to use any delay based effects in the loops or OD's before the switching system... it has it's limits... i also forgot about not using the amps reverb, and had used it for quite a long time with the reverb on the C50 head... thankfully it didn't hurt anything and everything still works 100% to this day... The Flanger and Wah i used before the switching system....
