where can i get pro tools? do i have to download it from a website or can i go to best buy and get the software there.

You need hardware too to run PT as I recall.

Is there a reason why you want PT over something else?

If you're on a Mac I would get Logic, if you're on a PC and a budget the new package from Reason called Reason Record looks very cool to me. Then there's Cubase, Sonar, Ableton Live for PC, all of them good. Pro Tools is not my favorite.

If you plan on being employed in a studio then get Pro Tools.

IMO, audacity is a bit basic. It will be okay for learning the principles of digital recording but you will soon want something more sophisticated.

Assuming that you have a PC-compatible, running Windohs XP SP3 or Windohs 7, I recommend Adobe Audition. This software package allows extremely detailed audio editing. This might explain why it is popular in the radio broadcast industry and with police surveillance departments.

I have been considering (for PC) Cubase Essential 5 which appears to have more than enough features for me except for one thing .......... it appears that it has no compressor! How weird is that?
